Advantages: Great games, cheap to buy, graphics are still great, games are very cheap.
Disadvantages: Controller hard to adjust to from new consoles.
I know, this console is old, and may not seem like a smart purchase, but they are so cheap it would be stupid not to at least try it.
I recently bought one of these from Amazon as a way of reliving my earlier days playing Xbox, and as I still had a number of games left over with no console to play them on, I felt it was a necessary purchase. I was ready to accept that the graphics would be terrible, the controller would be awkward and the games would have a complete lack of detail, but I was terribly wrong. As soon as I started playing, a wave of nostalgia came over me, giving me a nice happy feeling, (which is more than I've ever had with these new generic shooters) making me want to play more.
The graphics on the games (obviously, depending which ones) are actually surprisingly good, and although they don't come close to recent releases, are definitely enough to not have you repel in disgust, and reach for your 360 or PS3 controller. Although, the only true way of describing them is to look at screenshots of the classics, most of which had above average graphics, even by today's standards.
The games for this console are the real reason anyone would buy one of these nowadays, they are filled with exciting gameplay and features from when the games we have now didn't exist, and so they have unique things about them, and aren't just another Call of Duty clone. You have to remember, these games are the games that started/inspired most next-gen games, and they are absolutely worth playing.
The controller is quite a far cry from the 360 controller, but as long as you have the 'S' variant (the smaller, sleeker one that came with newer consoles) it should not be hard to adapt, and the controls will seem familiar in no time, even for someone who has not played this console before.
As this console is so cheap, and has been noted as having much better graphics than the PS2 (which is more expensive) there is no reason not to buy one of these, as it is the only true way of playing Xbox classics without using that botched 360 backwards compatibility.
Summary: An extremely epic console, highly recommend purchasing for some great unique games.
