Advantages: Size and portability
Disadvantages: Low battery life if screen brightness is too high
I purchased a pink Nintendo DS Lite for my daughter in December 2007 and it has been a huge hit both with her and with myself.
The DS Lite is a very stylish hand held games console and it has a "touch screen" which you use to play games.
The DS Lite is very compact and easy to transport. I would recommend you use headphones whilst travelling however as some games can be noisy!
Games are played using a stylus on the touch screen. The DS Lite is very well designed and includes a slot in which to safely store your stylus. Replacements are readily available in most game stores too.
The DS Lite has a reasonably long battery life too - if you keep the screen on its dimmest setting you shouldn't need to recharge the battery for 13 hours or possibly more. This is ideal if you are travelling and may be unable to recharge for a while.
I would recommend you always use screen protectors on your DS Lite however - some games require a lot of stylus action on the touch screen and a protector will help prevent any damage to the screen. The console isn't cheap so its worth spending a few pounds to protect it.
You can also play Game Boy Advance games on a DS Lite - this has been useful as there were some games my daughter wanted to play which weren't available in the DS format. You can pick up Game Boy Advance games quite cheaply too and this is a good way to supplement your games pool without breaking the bank, however it's worth bearing in mind that GBA games are less sophisticated than DS ones.
Overall I would highly recommend the DS Lite for a selection of games which range from simple childrens' ones to brain training and memory training games targetted at adults and its a must have when taking your child on a long trip - as I can testify when we went to London on the train and my daughter forgot it!
Summary: Excellent Games Console for All
