I own a pink ds lite console. I have had it for about a year now and it is still in perfect working order.
When I purchased it I also purchased an extended warranty that protects me from having to pay for accidental or mechanical damage. This is available if you buy any console from Game, and it was only 20pounds for 3 years.
Gameplay involves using a stylus which is like a pen but doesnt scratch the touch screen which is the bottome screen.
The top screen usually displays extra parts of the game but it doesnt work through touch.
You can also use the keypads like a traditional console. I think the best games are when you can switch between the two like Mario Kart or Rayman raving rabbits.
The graphics are not as good as if you were playing something like xbox 360 as the screen is too small, however the games are very suitable for kids and adults as there are specific games aimed at each age group.
The ds is an easy console to use, theres also a space to plug in extra components like headphones, and more recently the keep fit game and Guitar Hero. I havent bought these yet but from what I have seen they look like fun and add something extra to the console.
You can also hold the ds like a book for some games which is quite fun.
My ds cost 117pounds including, console, 1 game, warrenty, game card (points scheme) and box with extra stylus.
You can buy extra stylus packs and headphones. You can also get a hard case to keep it nice, but I just put it in a homemade non scratcy fabric case and this keeps it nice and shiny. You can charge it up on most trains I have found. The battery lasts for about 14 hours on mine, and I probably use it a few times a week and rarely have to charge it. Its very light to hold and so you can carry it around in your handbag easily.
Its a brilliant console, I am 20 and I still enjoy most of the games.

Summary: Good if you take long journeys often
