Advantages: Nice and compact, good choice of games.
Disadvantages: Expensive, Headache causing becuase the screen's too bright!
The Nintendo DS is a great idea, easy to use, hand-held, you can travel with it. The Lite is even better - slightly smaller, slicker, more appealing to adults as well and of course lighter. So what is wrong with the Nintendo DS?
THE GOOD
The Nintendo DS Lite is small, compact, easy to carry around and is rather slick. IT doesn't involve you twiddling your thumbs all the time on little joy sticks and comes with an all together more peaceful selection of games. It comes in many colours to suit all tastes and they even brought out three new colours for the summer! (The colours are White, Crimson and Black, Black, Silver, Pink, Blue, Blue and Black, Green, and Red). It has a large selection of games out, ranging from ones that help you cook, to ones that help you lose weight and ones that train your brain! The games are priced at £29.00 each and if it's an older game you can get for about £20.00 or on 2 for £30.00!
Nintendo DS Lites are not designed so that you sit plugged into the TV all day, they are meant to be taken around and travelled with. They do not require you to hunch over a controller all day and have many other methods of control. Such as voice, Pen and game controls. If you use your pen you can always buy a pack of 5 new ones from around £2.00!
THE BAD
Nintendo DS Lites are not really great to be travelled with they are like a book if you keep looking down at them you will get a headache and even those people who can manage will find not to be able to with the Nintendo DS Lite as it has quite a bright screen which can make you feel dizzy as well as sick!
The require you to bend your neck all the time or hold it up in the air. Either way your neck aches or arms hurt. It can be too bright and there is no way to adjust the screen on machine.
The voice control is seriously faulty as you either have to speak very plain simple English is a very loud voice and be a man or the machine will not register. It takes a long time for it to get used to your voice and if you don't repeat it exactly the same way as before it still won't do it!
After a while the games on the Lite can become very repetitive or just boring. They are often very expensive and last you a couple of days to complete or are incredibly hard to win or do anything with and (as with animal crossing) take forever and require total dedication to complete or win. They often have little substance and do not explain the instructions clearly. The screen claiming to be 'Brighter' is certainly brighter - so bright your eyes will pop out of your head and can give you dizziness or headaches are a while of using it. The Nintendo DS games are often boring. I like the idea of doing games to help you with your everyday life, but that requires you to take them everywhere with you and as they are rather expensive if they got broken, damaged or stolen you would be very upset.
The Nintendo DS's are targeted more at girls and Adults now which is no bad thing, however it is hard to please all including boys as well and they are losing out on their market to boys because of this. Nintendo need to find a target and aim it specifically at them and stop moving around trying to please everyone - it doesn't work.
The price is rather expensive - they now range depending from where you buy them and sometimes on what colour from £110.00 - £80.00 for new ones and anything as low as £20.00 for a second hand one.
THE VERDICT
If you can stand hunching over a tiny too bright screen for the cost of £90.00 knock yourself out, however I would happily trade my nearly new, hardly been used DS for £50.00! There might be a gap in the market for Nintendo DS renting though. Just for a weekend!
Summary: Good entertainment, but only for a short time.

- 09/12/08 You can change the brightness level onscreen and its advised that you do as it seriously extends the battery level if you reduce it. |
