Advantages: Huge selection of games, good value for money, easy to use, thin
Disadvantages: Can show up fingerprints, can hurt hands after a while
I had been unsure about buying a Nintendo DS for a long time as I usually take a long time with my purchases but I wasnt sure that there would be a huge range of games for my liking.
After overcoming the first hurdle of deciding to buy one, the next hurdle was trying to get hold of one before christmas. This was almost like Mission Impossible, there was just a severe shortage of them everywhere, and from what I can remember it was the same as this last christmas with the DS' and the WII. So my first point would be that although I havent lookied for them now, it may take a while to track down the one that you want, its worth the wait though as there are offers out there worth having.
There were many on Amazon being sold for upwards of £150 which was just ridiculas, so I held out and got one from Argos with Brain Training and an accessory pack for £116 which I thought was good value for money.
I finally got to play on it on christmas day and have hardly put it down since, I even take it to work with me!
I was surprised by how well the dual screen function works, I have never owned a handheld console before so didnt quite know what to expect, but the screens soon become the norm and you dont realise that you are looking at two screens most of the time. The lower screen is the touch screen and the upper one the display, I have had bad experienes with touch screens in the past but this one is fine, whether you use the stylus or your finger.
Some screens are not easy to play using the touch screen, or are not made to be played using it, such as Fifa 09, and in some ways I think this lets it down. The unit is obviously a rectangle with corners, and sometimes these corners dig into the palms of your hands when playing and getting involved in the game. Thgis is only a minor criticism though and you just have to get on with it.
There are a huge selection of games, and as I thought when it was bought, many are for the younger generation. Being 21 I have found it difficult to find my type of game, however there are so many out there that the choice is almost endless and I have ended up playing constantly on Pokemon, which is something that I owuld never usually just go out and buy. So in a way it opens up new genres of games that you normally may not consider.
There arequite a lot of accessories that you can get for the DS, and as I said, I got the accessory pack which has come in quite handy. There are little game holders which allow you to carry the games around without damaging them, a case for it which obviously protects it, a car charger(if you become obsessed like me and take it to work with you!) spare stylus', and a cleaning cloth which comes in handy as the black one gets very marked with fingerprints.
Overall I wouldnt hesitate to reccommend this to almost anybody of any generation or gender. This console hassomething to offer for everybody, and due to there not being many controls, it is so easy to use. Very impressed.
Summary: A great little console for almost anybody, i cant reccommend this enough
