Advantages: interactive, gba compatible, brighter / bigger screens
Disadvantages: fragile
The Nintendo DS Lite system is a smaller more fragile DS with the all the same features as the original DS except for visual improvements. You've got a sleeker design that easily fits into your pocket without looking bulky. It also has brighter larger screens. You can adjust the lighting in a few modes depending on how bright you want it, but the brighter it is, the faster the battery dies.
The charger port changed for the DS. The old DS charger was the same as the GBA charge so they were compatible. The DS Lite charger is strictly for the DS Lite only.
I would highly recommend against buying a DS Lite for a child mainly because of a big issue which Nintendo seems to have played down yet a quick Google search or even if you look for video complaints on YouTube, you'll see that many people have experienced a problem with the DS Lite dealing with hinge fracture. The DS Lite has a much smaller frame than the original DS,so the hinge apparently is very weak and if dropped, it could lead to cracking which can ultimately lead to the screen falling off and the DS not working, putting you to pay for repair costs and wait for the system to be fixed which takes forever. I recommend buying a protective case for your DS Lite, but not just a thin one, the best by far is the Nerf Armor which really shock proofs the system.
Anyway, like the original DS has download and play, wireless chatrooms for DS owners, an alarm, calendar, and a port to play Gameboy Advance games. Sadly, once again, Nintendo won't let us play even older Gameboy games on this system.
One cool thing about the DS is that you get free online play through a WiFi connection. You can connect with players globally to challenge them however in many cases you'll run into lag or cheaters who hack or disconnect if they're losing.
With its huge library of games, the DS Lite is a great choice in a portable system, far better than the PSP but really offers very little in improvements compared to the previous version of the DS.
Summary: The DS Lite is a good system but overshadowed by the previous and current DS models.
