Nintendo DS Lite
Advantages: Small. lightweight. huge range of games. cheap to buy
Disadvantages: cant play some of the newer released as they are made for 3DS only.
The Nintendo DS Lite was revolutionary when it was first released in 2006. It is a dual screen handheld games console which combines the use of touchscreen and regular handheld gaming controls such as the d-pad and buttons. It can appeal to all ages, not just kids, through games such as Super Mario Bros, Professor Layton (aimed at the older audience) and Sonic the Hedgehog.
There is barely any set up needed with this console, and it is incredibly easy to get started. All you have to do is simply charge it up (using the mains charger) and then switch it on. The console will talk you through a number of options such as entering your name, your birthday, your favourite colour etc, once this is completed the DS Lite is ready to use.
The DS Lite had two screens, one on the top and one on the bottom. The top one is around 3.7" and is a backlit LCD colour screen for excellent visual quality. The bottom screen is the same size as the top, also backlit LCD but also has the unique transparent analogue touch screen.
The touchscreen can be used for various games to control the on screen action, to draw pictures and wirelessly send them to your friends or to navigate through the menu's of the DS.
The DS Lite also has a microphone which can be used to communicate with friends during multiplayer games, use for in game commands, and also in games such as Yoshi's Touch and Go, you blow on the microphone to make Yoshi fly or make wind in the game to blow clouds away!
The DS Lite is also the last Nintendo DS model to be backwards compatible with GameBoy advance Games, although you can download these retro games through the Nintendo 3DS. The DS Lite is the only model to have a slot on the front for you to place to GBA games. So for those of you who loved your old gameboy advance or gameboy sp games, dont worry - you can still play them on this console! It is a shame that they didnt continue this feature.
The DS Lite comes in a range of colours, including Black, White, Pink, Turqouise and red. All games released for the DS systems will work, apart from the 3DS releases (obviousy) so you dont need to worry too much about this console being out of date. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of DS games out there, boasting an extensive games catalogue so you can be sure to never get bored of the choice available. The Battery life is also great for this console and can last around 10 hours when fully charged! So it is great for those who commute or travel alot and can really make those long journeys fly by. It is also small, sleek and lightweight so can fit in any handbag!
So to summarise I would definitely reccommend the Nintendo DS Lite, or any other model of the DS. It is suitable for any ages and has a wide range of games to suit anyone. It is reliable and lightweight and small so can be carried around easily, and the touchscreen is ingenious! Defintely worth spending your hard earned pennies on, especially if your a Gameboy/nintendo/mario fan!
Summary: Great little handheld console, great for the holidays or those who travel alot
