Advantages: Compact, Good variety of games, Fun, Online play, Supports good graphics & sound

Disadvantages: More appealing to younger people

This was the original Nintendo DS that was released on March 11th 2005 across the UK and the rest of Europe. There have been newer versions since then such as the Nintendo DS Lite in a variety of colours. The Nintendo DS is great fun and currently supports a large range of games of varying genre.

The Nintendo DS has dual screens. One is a standard screen on the upper part and one is a touch screen on the lower part. The upper part folds down to shut tight like a flip phone. This is a good feature as it protects both screens and the buttons from dirt and anything else. It has a directional pad on one side with the power button, and the buttons A, B, X and Y on the right hand side with the start and select buttons too. A favourite of mine are the two buttons on the top hand side of the console. Your index fingers reach round the top to press the trigger-like buttons, which feel great to use. There are two good quality speakers on the upper part. The Nintendo DS supports Nintendo DS games as well as Gameboy Advance games, which can be slotted in below.

The graphics are excellent, but it depends on the game you get. Some games have sharp and clear graphics, whereas others look a lot worse. The Nintendo DS also supports wifi, which enables you to wirelessly connect to the internet and play online against many other players across the world. This is a superb feature and is great fun to do. You can also wirelessly connect to other Nintendo DS users without internet so you can play games together, most of the time you only require one game card to do this so it is great.

You can pick up a second hand Nintendo DS currently for £59.32 from amazon.co.uk. This is because the newer Nintendo DS Lite is in production instead, so the older version is not in production. I would highly recommend you buy one as they are great fun, very portable and in my opinion, better than rival handhelds such as the PSP.

Thanks for reading

Summary: A worthwhile console with many good games built for it
