Advantages: Looks great

Disadvantages: Features are pointless and rather redundant, left unused.

We've seen the Initial DS console, a greatly improved DS Lite console, and now Nintendo has once again upped the specs and released the third upgrade called the DSi.

The DSi's major improvements are as follows:

Increased Screen Size
The screen has been made slightly bigger, and also slightly brighter. This is not a major upgrade, and isn't WOW, as the graphics are the same as predecessors. It is nice, but not nice enough.

2 Integrated Cameras
One camera is located on the bottom right of the lid, whilst the second is on the hinge, as you flip it up. These are currently only used as cameras, for their integrated picture application. It isn't very interesting, and rather a waste of time. It appears fantastic, and it could be, if only it was put to better use.
Perhaps in the future, there will be "eyetoy" similar games, but these will be incompatible with previous consoles, and also video chat will also be incompatible. It is a nice upgrade, but the usability is low at the moment.

New Sleeker Design
it is slightly less rounded, with a flatter, more rectangular shape. It is sleeker in the sense that it is smooth and very stylish, however, still very similar to DS lite, and is NOT a major breakthrough in design.

Memory Card Slot
It has a memory card slot, allowing people to download games from their online store and store it here so you can play it on the DS. Whilst this is a good concept, and allows people to get games quickly, it isn't necessary, and really need to be more like an R4 or TT card slot, where they have music or video app.

Its been about 2-3 years since the DS Lite was released, and who can blame Nintendo for attempting to freshen the market with an upgrade of their very popular handheld console? However, it is only just for looks, as the features are almost identical to the DS Lite, and the new features currently are not put to good use. If you can spare £150 for a new design, great. But i certainly wouldn't bother.

Summary: A good attempt, but not good enough

I agree. the features just seem like gimmicks to make younger people beg mommy and daddy to rush out and get the DSi. i can't believe they took out the GBA slot! I was hoping they'd include one for original gameboy games. Now they'll probably just have people pay to download them on their DSi which is stupid.

Don't really get why they've bothered upgrading the DS. There's nowt wrong with it as it is!

I was wondering whether to bother, as we have to DS's already. Thanks for the timely review. Nicely done 8^)
