Advantages: Has two cameras, audio playback, built in internet browser, dsi shop, new layout, bigger screens.

Disadvantages: Awful resolution cameras, playback is only for aac. format, bigger screens stretch the picture

The Nintendo dsi is a very sleek and crisp system from Nintendo and has a more fragile feel than the other two systems released by Nintendo.
It now has more of a multimedia approach and features two 0.3MP cameras, one on the front and one on the hinge, it has music playback and now features an online store which is similar to the Apple App store. You can download games from here and even a new internet browser.
When you switch it on you will notice the new larger screens and slightly different layout, it has now regained a power button instead of slider and has put in an sd card slot instead of the game boy advance slot.
There is a new software menu and this also is similar to the iphone, with applications ready to be slid around.
Small little features have been added, such as you can now change games whilst it is switched on and also you can now see your battery power in checkpoints not just full and low.
Altogether a nice upgrade from the original ds but not so much from the ds lite. This is good for a first ds too.

Summary: I would suggest that the upgrade from original ds is more beneficial than from ds lite.
