Advantages: Some good games, affordable
Disadvantages: Not great graphics or internet multiplayer
OK, the Gamecube was a console that I bought a few years back.
After that, most of my friends had Playstation 2s which had more popular games and more power in the console itself.
The console itself is an odd design, being a cube instead of the usual cuboid shaped console, and has a handle for easy carrying (for whatever reason) and comes in many colours such as purple, black, platinum, with the standard being purple. It takes mini sized CDs, which are smalled than normal CDs, so easier to store I guess.
There are four sockets for controllers, so you can play with four players, and there are another two ports on the front of the Gamecube. You use "memory cards" to store game saves, and other data pertaining to your advancement in games. These memory cards go into the slots. There are quite a few enhancements to the console, such as wireless "Wavebird" controller, GBA cable and bongo drums (for a Donkey Kong themed bongo game)
A good thing about Nintendo consoles is that you get the Nintendo games e.g. Mario, Zelda and Metroid series which are good fun. But misses out on quite a few games that were only released on PS2 and Xbox - a lot of these are the more violent games. Gamecube (and Nintendo consoles on the whole) had games more suited for family age ratings. Another disadvantage is lack of DVD support, which at the time made it less favourable since DVD players still weren't so cheap.
Right now, you can pick up a Gamecube very cheaply in a local video game store and some games for it too and it won't set you more than a few tens of pounds, which is quite a good deal if you want to play some games that you missed out. Although obviously don't buy one now thinking you'll get the latest graphics, multiplayer etc.
But still, there is a very large selection of games to keep you entertained for a low price, although not many new ones. Be sure to get some classics such as Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Super Smash Brothers Melee.
If you don't already have one, it may be worth checking local game stores for one, for some cheap entertainment.
Summary: Worth a pop if you see one in local game shop
