What could/should have been (Nintendo N64)

Advantages: Goldeneye

Disadvantages: Pricey software, most games too Disneyesque in content

The N64s limited success can be explained in one word, Goldeneye. This was the factor for me when deciding between this and the playstation. Goldeneye marked a new level in console gaming that has taken years to surpass, sadly Nintendo never built on the success of this game leaving the N64 to soon languish in the shadows of the playstation.
Nintendo made 2 crucial mistakes, firstly, being terrified by the piracy concerns of the cd it opted to stick with the cartridge system which meant that games were always going to be more expensive and harder to develop than its main rival. Secondly it kept such a tight reign on all games development, ensuring that all games were comfortable with all members of the family, that it limited the range of games available for all the young men out there that wanted blood, guts, swearing etc etc.
Goldeneye made the N64 a worthwile purchase for me, playing a 4-way deathmatch still can't be beat, but alas, this is about all the N64 is good for nowadays.
