Advantages: Graphics, Timeless games
Disadvantages: There aren't that many timeless games, cartridges not cds
I looked forward to getting the N64 with great enthusiasm. I played the demos in the shops amd was over-awed by the quality of graphics, gameplay and sheer addictiveness of the thing. "It'll be my birthday AND Xmas present," I said as I pleaded my father to buy the console. Sure enough, on its very first day out, I was the proud owner of the Nintendo 64 and game Super Mario 64. Brilliant though the game was, after a while it naturally got boring and I wanted something new. I am a big fan of the platform game, and most of the games I had for my old console the SNES were platform. But most of the games for the 64 were shoot-'em-up and sport, and most of their ratings were not up to much either. One exception was of course the brilliant Goldeneye. At first glance, there is absolutely no possible room for complaint. Graphics, gameplay, control, sound etc. are all brilliant, and even now I find myself being the only person in a group desparate to put the game on. Diddy Kong Racing, Perfect Dark, Lylat Wars and Banjo Kazooie are also among the all-time greats of this console. It is a shame N64 did not really take off, otherwise I feel the game manufacturers would doubtless have made more gems like these. Pity Playstation's games were just so much better, and there were more of them, because the graphics of the 64 are undoubtedly the best yet, and the best games of the N64 are better than the best of any other console. The fact Playstation etc. take CDs is another major blow for the 64, as CDs are cheaper and quicker to manufacture. Plus, the fact you can play your favourite songs over the telly and get demos which entice people to buy the games. I am sure Nintendo will have learned from their mistakes in time for the release of the Game Cube in 2002.

- 19/07/01 Good op!
I find that the N64 (my favorite!) has less choice but generally better games. I can't live without Turok 2, Goldeneye and Zelda. But I love these type of games. Can't stand SuperMario or any of that dinky cutsy games, the music is enough to make you stamp on the N64!!
Well written. |
