Advantages: powerful, classic games
Disadvantages: not as many games, expensive games
Its obvious that in terms of number sales the Playstation is the undisputed victor of this skirmish in the console wars. However, I bought a N64, and my two friends bought playstations and years down the line you would be interested in the results. I have played many Playstation games and my friends have played many N64 games and the truth is that one of those has submitted and had to buy a N64. I think the key is quality. There are millions of Playstation games but a lot of duds and the fact is the N64 is a more powerful machine. On top of that there is no waiting around for loading either. So, onto the games, the real difference-makers... I have never seen a playstation game that made me jealous of their owners but you should see my friends faces when they see this little lot...(theses are not reviews, just a list) Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, which one is the best console game ever? Well it has many competitors and they are all on the N64. These two games pretty much tie up the first person shoot 'em up genre on consoles. Nothing on the playstation touches them. Not to mention Turok 2, Shadowman. Onto RPG/Adventure games... The two Zelda games take care of that. Nothing to touch them on the playstation. PLatformers/Adventure.... Marioworld 64, one of many classic platformers/adventure games of which there are many and they are all immensely playable and not bettered on the playstation for my money. Sports... Is there are better tennis game than Mario Tennis? Better wrestling game than WWF THQ games. Driving games... Ok I think the playstation has more depth in this area, but there are still plently of great games for the N64. Mariokart is ok, but Diddy Kong Racing is good fun and V-Rally is excellent. Fighting games are a bit thin on the ground but there are some good value ones out there such as Fighter's Destiny, but its not real
ly my type of game to be honest but there is more choice on the playstation. The ultimate facts that can't be avoided is that the N64 is a better machine. Unfortunately is wasn't marketed brilliantly and also the games are expensive which was an error. Also some of the games have that cutesy look over a gritty edge of some Playstation games that may deter some people. With all that said, the quality of games of the N64 is much much higher in terms of how many games are released. You have much more choice if you buy a playstation but ultimately you turn down the opportunity to play some of the great games of all time. Not many of those on the playstation. The one thing we all know is that Sega are well and truly out of the game. The try and get to the market first but sadly their machines are not up to scratch and get easily outsold when nintendo and sony turn up. Watch for the disappearance of the Dreamcast when the X-Box and Nintendo Dolphin turn up. It is amazing that sony burst onto the scene and pushed Sega out with a cleverly marketed and priced machine with good game support, all that said however, it simply is not as powerful as the N64 and it has never produced really groundbreaking games such as those that I have mentioned.

- 31/07/01 Cheers Pamsy, I can see your point about being aimed at children but I disagree that they are not playable. But thanks for your comments, much appreciated as always. |

- 30/07/01 Good review. I haven't played a lot of N64 games, but those I have such as Goldeneye I wasn't impressed with. I think quality Playstation games such as Metal Gear Solid, Syphon Filter series, Driver series, and Medal of Honour just can't be found on the N64. Goldeneye and other N64 games concentrate too heavily on graphics. I've always found Nintendo consoles to have too much of an animated look, aimed more at children.
Also, I prefer the Playstation control pad. |

- 29/07/01 And the N64 Tony Hawks beats the playstation ones hands down. Shame not enough were made!
And on that note: yesterday (at the Urban Games in Clapham Common) I played Tony Hawk's 3 on the PS2 and thought it was absolutely brilliant!
Very good op! nick |
