Wipeout64 received a relatively bad press when it was first released - it hardly lit up the gaming charts and there was little hype for most people. However, those who did actually buy it had a pleasant surprise when they realised that it kept close to the original copies, yet pioneered to be even better than the original Wipeout and Wipeout 2097 for the PlayStation - it had found it's natural home on the N64. Wipeout now had the freedom to improve the graphics, and use even more of a precise control system, exploiting the analogue stick to it's full potential.
The actual game is very good, if slightly rough in some places. There are detailed tracks, stunning locations, and the best soundtrack heard in a game. However, there is one point which could have been improved-the clipping. You fly through walls and ceilings whenever you manage to fly off the track, only to be hastily retrieved by your anti-gravity pit ship.
This is only a fairly minor point, however, and Wipeout is a very good game, retaining all it's distinguishing points - incredible speed, amazingly powerful weapons and brilliant music. And once you get into it and it's fantastic and original medal system, you';e learn to love it.
