Advantages: Great for families, cartridges stand up to lots of hammering!
Disadvantages: Expensive games, fewer games available compared to other systems
The Nintendo 64 is a firm favourite of mine amongst all the consoles that are currently available, despite being a little dated now following the launch of more powerful machines. Being a cartridge based machine rather then CD, the games can cope with a lot of handling from your young ones far better than CDs which scratch easily. The console isn't too large and is also easy to connect up to your TV etc. One of the things that hubby and I like best about this machine, is that many of the games available are suitable for younger children..in fact, we are huge fans of Banjo Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64 (I've had to review those too!!) which are wonderful family games, take ages to complete, and suitable for all the family! OK, some argue that there isn't the same huge choice of games available for this as say on the Playstation, but though I agree, I find that the games that are available take in a much wider range of players of all ages. Most PSX games seem to be geared towards blood and violence and aimed at the twenty something gamer! The N64 joypad is also one of the best available and very easy to control....the D stick makes gaming a pleasure and it seems to be an ideal size for all, even younger gamers. The graphics on the N64 are superb, although can be childlike in their appearance, especially with the addition of the expander pack...and it also has excellent sound quality too. All in all, this is a wonderful games console, particularly for families!! The only disadvantage I can think of (other than the lack of games compared to what's available for the PSX) is that games are very expensive...ranging from £30 to £50 on average.
