Advantages: great games and nice slim look
Disadvantages: Takes A While To Get Use To The Controls
Ok this is the first time I have done a review on a games console, so feedback on how to improve would be great!
I used to have a game cube and loved the kind of games you could get, I am more into to games like Shrek and Zelda than blood spilling games, so when I was unable to buy new games for the game cube I knew it was time I looked into getting a new games console.
I looked at the Xbox and play station 3 but really was impressed with what I would get for my money but also the consoles are on the large side.. I know that you can get a play station 2 slim but they still take up a lot of space that I just don't have, the Wii is just what I was looking for like the game cube it is small and compact and very white!!! Which makes a change from black or sliver.
The Package
As I had liked the Nintendo game cube before I decided to go for the Wii.. the Wii was better priced than the Xbox and playstation 3 buy a mile! I paid £300 for mine but that did include:-
2 main controllers (but only one nunchuck as sold separately)
4 games ( Shrek the third, Zelda, Wii Sports and The Robinsons)
Memory card (1GB)
The price for just the console itself in my area is£170 then goes up depending on the package you want, if I brought the whole package separately I would have to pay more than £300. As the controllers themselves cost £30 each then you have to get another numchuck if you want to play 2 player on your games which is another £15 on top.
The fact that I am able to play my old game cube games on the Wii is great! Some of the games I am unable to use the Wii controllers but I can plug in my old game cube controller, I can also use my old memory cards too which makes up for it!!
Setting up the Wii
Setting up the Wii is really straight forward it is just a case of plugging in all the leads! And placing the motion sensor on top of your TV but in the middle! But read the booklets that comes with the box but it is that simple I promise you..
The Controllers
The controller works on the motion senor that is placed on top of your TV! I had to buy an extra main controller but did realise that you had to buy the Nunchucks separately! When you buy a console you only get one main controller and one nunchuck so to play with two players you will have to buy the others.
Connecting the nunchuck to the main controller is again simple, you just plug it in at the bottom, the same goes for the classic controller too.
On the Wii I like the fact that you could do the actions/moves in the games, however in playing a level game that I had to fight In I found that it was really hard to control.. When I wanted to be facing forward the charter was facing backwards and all ways getting killed!
I did think that the Wii would be a lot smother than it actually is but I think it does take a while to get use to so may be I haven't given it enough time yet! The other down side to the controller is that the menu/home button is in the middle, now if your finger slips off the A button which is normally jump or fire then menu comes up and if you are not care full you could lose your game.
The numchuck is simply enough! You have the swivel button that moves the charters around then on the rest were your finger sits is the Z and C buttons, for me these are to close together it may be that I just have big fingers but when I want to press the C button I some times find I have pressed the Z instead..
I have also found that jumping can be a problem! As the controllers go on motion sensors the slightest move of my hand the charter moves too but like I said before you can either use the old game cube controllers or the Wii does have a classic controller which you can buy which would set you back another £15, but I do think it is worth the money!
If you are like me and can not get the hang of the controllers on a levelled game but can use them with the sporting games then this is ideal solution!
Graphics
For me the graphics are fine but some of my male friends and partner have commented that the graphic are a bit of a let down, I have to agree that the picture could be a little bit sharper but as long as I can see the picture on the screen its not a great worry for me.
You don't get play back like you with the playstation, and the Wii also does not have Blue Ray like the Playstation 3. but for me this is not a great concern, as the whole family can join in and play with you which to me is an added bonus, even my mum who is 63 and never played a console game in her life enjoyed play on the Wii.
Other features
The Wii is also able to connect with the internet as long as you have broadband! You are also able to use wireless router. Online you can look at the Wii news and weather channel, shop, download other games to play and also play virtual games which I think is a great feature.
The downloaded games get there own channel which is on the main menu so they are very easy to find! The disc you insert is always channels one ( disc channel) and the others follow, so you don't have to spend ages finding them.
You also have a photo channel, which allows you to up load all your photos to view on your TV screen, you are also able to edit these. You can change the colour of your pictures and add frames ect.
Wii Sports game
On the Wii sports game you can play the following games which I personally think breaks you in on how to use the controllers, the games on the sports discs are:-
Tennis 1-4 Players
Your Mii ( little person that is meant to be you ) moves around automatically and all you have to do is perform the tennis action by this I mean pretend that the controller is really a tennis racket
Baseball 1-2 Players
Simple game like the tennis you have to do the actions as you would if you were really playing baseball, you can either pitch or bat, with recoveries and runs done automatically by other little Miis .
Bowling 1-4 Players
I found this one a little hard than the rest so there for did not enjoy it as much! Again you do the action as if you were really bowling but have to release a button to let the bowling ball go. But with a bit of practice you do get the hang of it.
Golf 1-4 Players
a very fun game to play with all the family! With the golf you can go up to 9 holes and every course is different! You get sand pits and rivers like you would on real golf courses! Also when taking a shot you have to take in account wind and how hard you hit the ball.
Boxing 1-2 Players
The only game that you get to use the Nunchuck with, I do find that when playing this game I can not stop laughing not only at myself but at others! But it can be a great work out if!
On all of the above sports you can go for the training mode before you start the game, but I found it more enjoyable to go straight in.
Overall, Wii Sports is a great demonstration of the Wii's potential and I'd probably pay the full price of £35 for it. If anything, it got me anxious to see full-fledged games surface on the basis of these wee versions.
Over All
I love the Wii ok so with the controls you need to get use to them! But once you have found a way its great fun to play.. I love the sports disc and the family games too as they are great for all the family to play not matter what the age. However I did see a downside when letting a 7 year old play, they got too over excited and nearly hit my very new TV. I think in a few years they will up grade the Wii and the graphics may improve (here's hoping for the boys).
Summary: you have to get one
