Advantages: Great range of games, keeps you active, fun for all the family, competitive

Disadvantages: My other half sometimes gets too close to the TV when playing bowling!!

I had been pondering on whether to buy a Nintendo Wii for some time now, wondering whether they are really up to the hype that they seem to have created. I finally took the plunge and I am so glad that I did. It is great fun and there are games for the whole family to enjoy.

The Wii console comes in a box with the Wii Sports game which includes tennis, baseball, boxing, bowling and golf. These games are great as they keep you active, and you get to play sports either against the computer or with friends ( the games are for up to four players). There are training modes where you can practise and when you play against the computer you generate points and therefore increasing your skill level. My personal favourite is tennis.

The console is very small, and you put the discs in it. There is also a sensor bar that you place in front of your television. The games are played using the remote controls . So, if you are playing tennis for example, you use the remote control like you would a tennis racket. The sensor bar picks up the remote controls movements. Just be careful not to get too close to the TV or you could end up causing an accident with the controller and your TV! Also, always put the wrist straps on because if your hand did slip and you dropped the controller, it won't go flying out of your hand if you have it attached to your wrist.

The console records how long you have played on it each day and which games you played and this information can be found on the main menu in the form of e-mail style messages that you open up by using the remote control.

The characters that you use to play the games are called Miis. You can design your own Mii to look like yourself by choosing different facial features and hairstyles and you can give it a name. You can make as many Mii characters as you like and these will appear in the games too, but your character will be the one that you play with and will generate the points.

The graphics are not realistic looking like the X box 360 or Playstation 3. They are fun looking with 3D cartoon like characters with bright colours. There are a wide range of games available for the Wii such as brain training, active games that get you moving, music games and old favourites from Nintendo and Sega Mario and Sonic.

The Wii package with the sports and one controller included is around £169.99, although different stores do different deals with extra games for a little bit extra. There are loads of accessories you can buy such as extra controllers, nunchuks ( for boxing and other games that require two hands), steering wheels and other devices.

If you are looking for a console that is great fun, but offers more than just sit down computer games then I recommend the Wii. It is a great console that the whole family can join in with and great for parties and Christmas time.

Summary: A great console that offers something for everyone and gets you moving
