Advantages: Hands on, fun gaming experience, free online gaming with Wi-Fi connectivity
Disadvantages: None.
The Wii is the 5th console created by Nintendo. The first being the NES, then SNES (super nintendo), N64, Gamecube, and now the Wii.
At first I wasnt too sure about it, I'd not had a Nintendo console since the N64, I'd become a Playstation girl. I remember the console coming on sale just before christmas in 06' and people were going absolutely mental to get their hands on a console, I'm sure Nintendo had done it on purpose, launching the console on the lead up to Christmas.
There was utter chaos in the shops, as parents tried desperately to get their hands on a Wii for their kids, it wasn't before long that all shops had sold out of the console, and people had to then queue at the doors of shops, when a delivery was due first thing in the mornings.
People who had got their hands on one, or more, went to selling them on ebay for rediculous prices.
After christmas had passed, it was still pretty hard to get hold of a console, so I gave up for a while.
Then in the summer of 07', I decided to finally buy one, and I've never looked back. I absolutely love my Xbox 360, but my Wii's a totally different gaming experience.
It's a real hands on console, which you can have fun playing on your own, but in my opinion its more of a group/party console.
It's best played with 2 or more people, depending on the game of course.
When it first came out, there wasn't much to choose from gamewise for the Wii, but nowdays the shelves are chocker with the amount of different games to play.
The game that comes with nearly every new Wii console, is the Wii Sports Pack, the game has 5 sport simulation games, Bowling, Golf, Tennis, Baseball and Boxing. Players must use the wireless wii remote, to mimic the actions of the actual sport.
For example, with the Golf game, players must hold the Wii remote, down to the side, and swing it like an actual golf club. Bowling, players swing the Wii remote from their side, in a forwards motion to simulate actually throwing a bowling ball, and so on. The Boxing game, is the only one of the 5 sports, that requires you to use the Wii Nunchuck, which is included in the package, it clips into the bottom of the wireless Wii remote, and has players hold both remotes, and swing them to mimic actual boxing punches etc.
There are hundreds of games available for the Wii now, I have around 20 games for mine, varying from single player games like Super Mario Galaxy, Paper Mario, to games I can play with a group of friends like Mario Kart Wii, Mario & Sonic Olympics, Guiness World Records, Wario Smooth Moves, and loads more.
Another great addition with the Wii, is the Mii's. The Mii is your own personalised character, which you create, to look like anybody you want, or yourself. This character is used in the Wii Sports games and various other Wii titles.
Each and every game requires you to use the wireless Wii Remote, and sometimes the Nunchuck for various gaming experiences.
One of the best things about the Wii, is its free online gaming, it uses Wi-Fi connectivity, and is completely 100% free, unlike the Xbox 360 where the subscription is £40 per year.
You can visit the Wii shop online, where you can purchase old Nintendo game titles, for a few Wii points, which are similar to the Xbox Live points cards. I bought Mario 64, and the old Donkey Kong games from the SNES, there are also old Sega titles to buy, including original Sonic the Hedgehog.
Yet another great thing about the Wii, is the ability to play original Gamecube games. I bought Supersmash Bros. for £4 in my local Gamestation, to play on the Wii, however you may need to purchase a "Retro Game Pad" which has the same buttons as an old Gamecube Controller.
The Wii is without doubt, the most fun console out there, with its slim, clean white design, its not big and hefty like the Xbox 360.
I'd recommend anyone who's a fan of Nintendo, or who likes hands on gaming, which requires you to be active, and use your body in some games.
You can purchase one from most Gamestores, Highstreet stores for around £170/£180, prices vary depending on the store.
The console gets a 10/10 from me.
Summary: Fantastic fun for all ages.
