Advantages: Interactive gameplay, no wires to controllers
Disadvantages: Can be dangerous if not careful about surroundings
When the Nintendo Wii first hit the shops I didn't understand what all the fuss was about. I'd always been a fan of Nintendo as opposed to other consoles, ever since I received the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) for Christmas when I was about 11, and even owned a Gamecube, but the Wii didn't really interest me.
That changed when my cousin, aged fourteen, brought his Wii round to my house and the whole family got to play on it. We started off with Mario Kart, which displayed my distinct lack of co-ordination with the Wii wheel, then moved on to Mario & Sonic at the Olympics, Wii Sports and then finally the Wii Fit.
This convinced me and I am now the proud owner of a Nintendo Wii, Wii Fit and several other accessories.
It is great game for the whole family and friends to get involved with and compete against each other.
The games are in CD format and can be quite expensive but the graphics are top notch and it makes it worth it.
I like that the games are truly interactive, bowling at the TV screen is a bit surreal at first but highly enjoyable when you get that strike. It's great that everything is wireless and it sits next to my TV without cables making it look untidy. You do have to watch your surroundings, with arms waving and jumping around you could easily knock off grandma's Doulton Figure or catch someone in the face. One of my friends from work nearly needed stitches after being hit in the face by one her daughter's friends, who was playing the bowling game at the time.
I like that the console is relatively cheap (£160ish) but it's a bit annoying that you only get one controller, and it's £27 to purchase another one. Still compared to other consoles, it's good value for money.
If I was to be a bit nit-picky I would maybe have preferred the actual console to be maybe black instead of white but that is my personal preference.
While I didn't understand the attraction at first I am definitely a convert now.
