Advantages: revolutionary control system which opened up completely new style of gaming
Disadvantages: needs some better titles to be recognised as a good console rather than average
Having only co-owned a Wii for less than a year and only played a handful of games I still feel that I can make a good opinion on this console and that opinion is that is is fantastic!
What you need to learn about this console is that it is not i repeat NOT for hard core gamers so if you are simply going to knock this console because it doesnt have anything like Halo/CoD or Resistance: FOM on it then I suggest you keep reading and realise that there is more to gaming than the FPS gaming genre, contrary to popular belief *frowns*.
This console used a controller that is easier described as similar to a TV remote and you use it by pointing it at an IR detector that is designed to be placed infront of your TV screen so that your points to the screen are accurate with the pointer on screen. This style of control opens up a whole different dimension of gaming and whilst many may scoff and scorn the console calling it 'gimmicky' yes you are perfectly right, it is, but this is where it gets some of its most fantastic titles from. My favourite of which is The Legend od Zelda: Twilight Princess. Within the game you 'weild' the 'Wii-mote' like a sword and use the 'nunchuck' for moving forwards backwards and turning etc. It is a bit of a learning curve but it is not hard at all, after about an hour it feels second nature to you like you have been gaming this way all your life.
Also a lot of people 'knock' the Wii for its graphics (or lack of good graphics). Twilight Princess may not be anything in comparison to some of the games on the Xbox360 or the Playstation 3 but they are not that shabby at all for a Nintendo console. So for all of you aesthetic orientated gamers out there, this console its self looks attractive and compact and also performs well. Graphically and overall.
The only real gripe that I have with the consol is that whilst playing any of the Guitar Hero games for the console, there seems to be a huge delay and a very intermittent response time between key strokes and when going from my PS3 version to the Wii version, it is very scetchy, I can only pressume that this is because the Wii used IR for the controller rather than the PS3's bluetooth. But it is simply something you need to get used to.
Overall this console I feel is extremely unfairly treated by the majority of the gaming community and is perceived to be a very childish console, much like the N64 was given this same blanket review by most Sony fans, however this console again just like the N64 may surprise you with titles such as Resident Evil and its own version of CoD4: Modern Warfare, which I personally feel is fantastic and very unique compared to the other controller 'pad' versions of the game.
Dont snort at this console untill you have given it a decent chance, you may find you are pleasantly surprised.
As a final note, I think that what I love most about the Wii is that is does not try to compete with the other two 3rd gen consoles, and this I feel is where it wins a true victory in the gaming market which neither of the other two consoles have been able to achieve because they are too wrapped up in their 'console war' with each other. While they concentrate on who has the most exclusive titles or best reviews etc, the Wii simply concentrates on giving their target audience enjoyable and loveable games that can be enjoyed by many more than simply the hardcore gamer, yes all three console have games for all genres but Sony and Microsoft concentrate far too much in competing with each other rather than simply pleasing their consumers.
Kudos to you Nintendo, you know what matters most, again.
Summary: I love this console
