Advantages: Quick to learn and easy for anyone to get into.

Disadvantages: Extra controllers and other accessories add to the initial cost by a substantial amount.

Comical name aside, the Wii is a simple, yet brilliantly fun gaming console from Nintendo.

The Wii seems to be aimed at everyone, especially appealing to "non-gamer" types, who have always found it a bit of a chore to learn all the buttons, joy-sticks, d-pads etc, etc that inhabit the world of "serious" gaming: Xboxes and PS3's... Wii is here to rescue you all!

The key to the Wii is it's wonderfully innovative motion sensing controller, that picks up on all the shakes, flicks, waves, waggles and tilting of the controller (The Wii remote). This makes it far more intuitive to pick up and start playing! If you're driving Mario around a race circuit, then you just tilt the Wii remote left or right and as sharp as needs be to get around those corners and dodge them banana skins!

It's great at parties, gathering everyone around for lots of fun, not only as a player but as a viewer, as sometimes it can be more fun just watching the person waving the Wii remote around - the body movements alone can be very entertaining!

If there is one downside to the whole Wii experience, then it's the cost of all the extra controllers and other accessories you'll need to take full advantage of all the multi-player games - which is where the Wii comes into it's own. So after your initial £180 spend - you still need to get at least another Wii remote (around £30) a Nun-chuk controller (another £15) - Then there's the new Wii Remote Motion+ add-on (another £15 per Wii remote!) You can shop around and save a few quid here and there, but do budget for all these extras.

It does end up costing you more, but if you take full advantage of what the Wii has to offer, especially in terms of all the fun and enjoyment for the whole family then it's could be well worth it.

Summary: Great fun for everyone, a truly universal games console.
