Advantages: New thing, refreshing
Disadvantages: Get bored once the novelty fades away
I remember when this first came out. It was heralded as a revolutionary in gaming technology, the future of gaming. Reviewers, critiques and Nintendo spokespeople all blew trumpets of jubilation as they proudly announced the wii's arival.
Several years later, the buzz has definately died down. Nintendo, once king of the gaming world, have resorted to making cheesy, nursing home adverts.
Making the Wii was definately a gamble for Nintendo. It could have gone either way, by being different they could have proppelled their lead (which was steadily shrinking with the Xbox and PS2 matching the Game Cube at the time) over other Microsoft and Sony, or just hastened their downfall to mediocracy. Unfortunately for Nintendo, they lost.
It could really have gone either way. Had they decided to invest a little more in graphics and playability, it could've worked. But the Wii just didn't get all that. For the first few months, there was massive hype surrounding this. Wii parties sprang up around the country and everyone had atleast one virtual Mii they could call theirs.
But then the dust began to settle. The cracks started to show. The graphics, people realised, were absolutely attrocious. Surely, a simplistic game such as Wii sports could have had a little more effort to make sure that arms didnt go through heads and bodies?
Also, once the novelty of moving about hitting invisible tennis balls faded, we started to realise that there really wasn't all that much to play. While Xbox 360 and PS3 churned out Call of duty and Little Big Planet, Nintendo's Wii sat dejectedly on the side. Of course, there was Wii Fit, which was a massive success and really fun... for a while. But like the Wii, it fell down on it's playability. After we finnished pretending to run and doing Yoga, we quickly got tired of it.
Nintendo deffinately had the lead at first, people flocked to their console because of the novely. But really, for nothing else. After a while, most of us got bored and turned our heads to Microsoft or Sony. I advise you do the same to be honest.
