Advantages: an amazing catalogue of games

Disadvantages: outdated, early models were flawed

When I got this console, and I first booked it up.. I was seeing stars... Well, small 3D cubes to be exact, but I was amazed, the fluidness of the loading screen. I was just gobsmacked as my previous console had been my N64, and whilst I commend it to the high heavens in my review for it, I could not help but think "this blows the N64 away" and indeed it did.

Apart from the actually initial loading screen, and after mopping up my slobber I proceeded to put my first PS2 game into my first Sony console. So far i am very impressed. The overall design of the console is very different what what we knew as the Playstation, there is no flip up lid to insert your game disk, instead you have a very swish CD tray that ejects from the consoles front. This was pretty 'Wow' and more or less made me fall in love with the console.

And so Tekken Tag Tournament loaded and from the second the intro scene loaded to the second it ended, I was in awe, I simply could not believe that anything could have produced these graphics. (I do ofcourse now know that the graphics are completely inferior to the 3rd Gen consoles, particularly the PS3)

The console has got an absolutely monster sized catalogue of games from evert genre you can imagine: FPS, RPG, Racing, Arcade, Sim, RTS. You name it the PS2 has it! And is possibly the most successful console of all time too.

The console can have USB items such as keyboards and mice installed too to use with certain software that can be purchased for the console such as the action replay game cheat discs, this makes it far easier to insert coding rather than using the standard PS2 contoller which is very slow to use on this type of software.

Unfortunately my PS2 started to get rather ill after about 2-3 years of loyal service as there were several different types of PS2 released all with varying problems. From disk read errors to actually damaging discs. Sony continuially rectified these problems but it was too late for my baby as its warranty had expired. My dad purchased replacement parts for it and tried to perform surgery upon it himself, following instructions for the repair exactly and yet it still didnt work, we discovered that the actual gearing for the LED reading arm had actually melted from the heat inside my console.

Never the less, I upgraded to the PS2 Slimline as I loved the console so much and knew that it was just a one of problem and was willing to bite the bullet again and try again.

Overall the quality of this console is superb and the software that goes onto it is amazing, regardless of the advent of 3rd gen gaming, this console still has some ace titles on it.

If you would like my opinion though, even though the PS3 boasts backwards compatability I would check online lists and see if your main favourite games are supported. Although you will not be dissapointed with the selectioin of PS3 games, this is just a bit of advice for you to know as the PS3 is not 100% backwards compatible.

Summary: A fantastic console which defined a generation

Great system but their controllers always seem to stop working for me within 2 years.
