Advantages: Was the best console around at the time
Disadvantages: Was loud, very very LOUD!!!
Sony entered the gaming world and shook it up quite a bit with their Playstation. Then they released the second generation of Playstation, The Playstation 2.
Now when images were first aired the design of the console hit many people with a erm it looks like a black brick with slots running down its length. And to be fair they were quite right too. It was a large rectangle block shape with a smaller one underneath it. Grooves ran around the front and side of the machine.
The cd drawer was on the right hand side and blended in so you could not see it .
The reset button and the open/close buttons were also on the very far right too under the Sony logo, reset shone with a bright ice blue led, and the reset was green.
The memory card slots and controller ports were all hinged. They also blended in with the grooves and hinged inwards when you inserted the pads or cards. The base of the playstation 2 had a small triangular edge which was a blue colour, this really set it off and looked great.
On the top of the console Playstation 2 was imprinted into the plastic and PS2 was stuck on above in ablue colour.
On the bottom left of the ps2 there was an I-link port and 2 usb's for connection of the eye-toy and other peripherals.
The neat thing with this console was that you could stand it vertically aswell as horizontally. And even the small PS logo on the cd drawer rotated so it was always the right way up. Quite clever design really.
You could purchase either a horizontal or vertical stand for your ps2 which gave you more of the blue angles to make it look cool. Which to be fair it did!
The Playstation 2 was 128-bit and had a much developed graphics engine chip in place, giving it amazing graphics, it also doubled as a region 2 dvd player and was very very good at playing dvd's, cd's as well as its main objective of playing games.
It was also backwards compatible and could play old playstation games too with the added benefit of being able to upscale some of them. This meant enhancing the graphics slightly and smoothing some of them out and increasing game loading times!
The ps2 had an optical out on the rear as well as an expansion slot for a network adapter.
The release day had very few games noticeably tekken tag and smugglers run to show off a bit, and fantavision a firework game which visually looked awesome.
These were great but on release day the total of 3 games, 1 ps2 and memory card cost me in the region of £400. That's a lot of money to be fair. But was it worth it.
Well Yes it was a dvd player and a games console that would make its mark in history and bring some of the best games ever developed into the world. Such games as gran turismo and metal gear solid, not to mention tekken, ico and the catalogue goes on and on and on.
The amount of fun I've had with it and with friends definitely made me look back and say it was a good purchase.
One of the Ps2's flaws was it was rather loud, the cooling fan kept it cool alright but my god was it noisy. Most of the case was devoted to heat sinks and cooling contraptions but it was like a mini jet engine.
The other flaw with this console was not actually the console, but when it was released. It will be released in feb, oh actually it will be erm , later and later and er later again. It took almost 6 months for the ps2 to actually be released after its schedule.
The playstation 2 is the most popular games console ever made selling millions of units and had a game collection to boot too. Hundreds and hundreds of games are available and are still being made because of its success.
But the overall opinion is up to you, I may say how much fun I had and that its great but dooyoo is about peoples opinions so you really have to make up your own mind about this console, if you own one or not and make your own judgement!
Summary: A great games console, taht still sells today! Well done Sony!
