Advantages: Play your old PSone games on, DVD.
Disadvantages: No online connectivity yet, Not-too-good games, WAY overpriced.
There has been so much hype surrounding this machine, mostly by non-gaming jouralists etc, just because the origional Playstation was brilliant. When it comes to the Playstation2, there isn't much special about it. The only half-decent game out on the day of the release was Timesplitters and possibly SSX, but all the rest were either tired sequels (i.e. RRV, Tekken Tag) or camp Japanese games. If you look at the graphics of say Tekken Tag, then they are not too much better than Tekken3 on the Playstation1, whereas the upcoming Consoles - the gamecube and x-box are much more powerful and they have better graphics, plus the x-box will have a hard-drive, compared with the 1994 technologhy of the memory card. Sony mask this with the words "backwards compatability", meaning that you can play PSone games on it and use your old controllers. Although you can't use the old multi-tap :-( So that people think "hey, it plays my old games, i'll get it", but what is the point when you still have your PSone. You could only sell it for around £30 and the PS2 costs £300, and at the moment, the games are not much better than on the PSone. There is DVD play-back, but that has some problems with some users, because of a "green hue" covering the screen About the only good game coming out in the foreseeable future is "Metal gear solid 2", which shoud be truly fantastic. All said, it GOOD, but compared to the x-box and gamecubes sheer power. (or even the dreamcast with it's vast library of excellent games), it's a bit of a miss. But no doubt, people who have spent their money on it will say it is amazing, because they don't want to look like they have wasted £300.

- 08/01/01 I still firmly believe that this could be a failure for Sony (in the UK at least) although you will in the future be able to put a hard drive in the PS2's expansion port.
X-Box and Gamecube do look pretty impressive in comparison, I'll be sticking with my Dreamcast for now. |
