Advantages: DVD playback, Backwards compatability, Great 3rd party support
Disadvantages: Difficult to program for, More powerful systems availiable, Expensive
The release of the playstation 2 was much anticipated. Mainly by mainstream gammers facinated by the PS1 but also more widly by gamers across the various formats. The original console attracted the masses as it was both well publicised and good value for money. The PS2 now only £199 is a very good deal also and set to offer similar quality titles as the first system.
It also allows users to watch DVD movies on it. This is a major advance for the first time a console becoming an entertainment system.
There are several great games out there already but the real power of the PS2 will take some time to tap into as with all consoles. Essential titles are Virtual Fighter 4, Grand Theft Auto 3 and Grand Turismo 3.
With the promise broad band internet and a great catalogue of games, the PS2 looks set to be a winner however it seems it will take a while to reach its full potential!

- 15/05/02 It's true that the PS2 software quality is improving all the time but the reason many may think that the console is still in its infancy is that there was very little decent software available for a dreadfully long time after release. The PS2 is now going on for being three years old in native Japan, in an industry where the accepted retirement age of a console is around five years (though this hasn't stopped the original PS1 from doing great business well past that limit).
As 'sharrowing' rightly says below, Sony are already talking about the PS3 and with the Xbox and Gamecube now on the market, the PS2 is the weakest of the next generation consoles. Not that it matters of course, Sony have sold 22 million machines around the globe so we'll all be playing PS2 games for a long time to come : ) |

- 15/05/02 You say it's still a young console, but it's now the oldest of the current bunch. And isn't there talk of a Playstation 3 on the horizon? The PS2 better grow up quick or it'll miss the boat! |
