I've had my PS3 for 4-5 years now and it still works extremely well. I use it mainly to get on to Netflix and play a few games, but my boyfriend plays games on it all the time. When it's been on for a while, sometimes the screen will freeze and it has problems staying connected to the WiFi occasionally, but I have never had any serious problems with it. I know some other people with PS3s and I don't think they have had any problems with internet connections, but they have been know to over-heat. Since the PlayStation 4 came out, the PS3 has been overshadowed, but it's still a good system. You won't be able to get the newest, next-gen games like Fallout 4 or Mortal Combat X, but since they were around for so long, there are way more games available for the PS3. Many gaming stores sell pre-owned PS3 games for a lot cheaper than you can get them new. Since the PS4 is so new, there aren't a lot of games for it, they are generally more expensive, and you can't find many of them pre-owned. Then again, the PS4 can do things that the previous version could not. The PS3 does not have the amazing graphics and the level of interaction that you can get from the PS4. Since I am just the type to play Skyrim every now and again, I am perfectly happy with the PlayStation 3. If you are an avid game player (or really love one and want to give them a great gift), then you should probably just invest in the newest console, because the games they have come out with for it and the games they will be making are really cool.
I do not use my Playstation 3 all the time but enough to know that it is definitely a better choise than its opponent Xbox 360. I know a lot disagree but personally I like to play the games and do not need loads of help and instructions (it to be user friendly) and where many see this as a fault If you are a good gamer it is probably better for you. I am not saying the Playstation 3 is the best current console, because it isn't, that title would either go to Xbox 1 or Playstation 4. But If your not looking to spend too much and think you will enjoy the reasonably "high tech games" to then "brand new, next gen games" then Playstation 3 is for you.
This model of Playstation 3 has plenty of storage space, wireless sensitivity, is aesthetically pleasing, has online capability (psn), is capable of playing DVD's and Playstation 1 games and so much more that I simply don't have time to list. What's more the Playstation 3 (in my experience) requires little maintenance; I have had mine for years and it has never had problems or broken.
Conclusively if you are not sure weather to get this PS3 or not consider if you meet one of the following:
want a cheaper option too the newer consoles, aren't bothered about not playing newest "high tech" games, don't like all the instructions and guidance you get with some other consoles.
If you meet one of the following then I would definitely recommend the PS3.
