Advantages: Blu-Ray, hard drive, Internet, free PlayStation Network
Disadvantages: No HDMI cable included, little backwards compatibility
One thing to remember about the PlayStation 3 is that it is not only a games console, but a fully-fledged entertainment system.
As for the gaming element, the graphics are unbeatable because the console can output in any SD or HD format including 1080p (if you have a compatible television) and Dolby Digital. However, make sure you pick up an HD lead at the time you buy because there isn't one included in the box. The latest version comes with a DualShock3 controller, which is similar to the PS2 DualShock2 controller, but without the wires, which is a great relief! Also inside this beast is an 80GB hard drive and networking facilities such as ethernet and WiFi, accessories that had to be bought separately for the PS2.
Connected to the Internet, you can not only play online games, but also make use of the console's web browser. Adobe Flash support means you can watch videos from the likes of YouTube and BBC iPlayer on your TV.
Perhaps the biggest advantage of the PS3 is that it doubles as a Blu-Ray player. Blu-Ray players are expensive and do only one thing. So why not spend on a PS3 and get more for your money? The PS3 is actually the most compatible Blu-Ray player you can get because it can automatically update itself over the Internet. And remember that Sony is the company behind Blu-Ray, so they will ensure that their customers always get the best. The noise of the console has been reduced to that of the slim PS2. As a bonus, the PS3 will upscale your DVDs to 1080.
Summary: The PS3 is not just for games fans
