Sony Playstation 3 60 GB
Advantages: Best value features-wise on the market
Disadvantages: Expensive, Currently a lack of games
I got my Playstation 3 on the day of the UK release.
I am very pleased with the appearence of the console it is very sleek and shiny and finger prints are easily cleaned on the black surface.
The PS3 menu or the XMB as it is officially known is by far the best console menu I have ever come across it betters the Xbox 360's and the Nintendo wii's by far. It has many options and functions some which are standard of a games console some meet the standard of PC's and media centres. It is simple to use and if you have used the PSP's menu you will be automatically familiar with the options and settings. However even if you have never used a PSP or a PS3 before the menu is easy to use and youll have no problems finding what you need.
Video playback however is a little disappointing it supports only MPEG and MP4 movie formats so you would have to convert most movie formats to MP4 before it is playable on your PS3's hard drive. Also it seems Sony will not be including mainstream movie file support in a firmware update in the near future.
Music playback is a great feature on the PS3 as in contrast to video playback all main formats are supported and songs can be backed up from your CD colection to your PS3's HDD.
Photo viewing meets all standards and the slideshow feature shows all your photos as if they were photos being scattered on the floor.
CD and DVD playback is a great feature on the system and they run well however on some televisions NTSC DVD's will be shown in black and white this tends to be a problem with cheaper TV's.
The PS3 is by far the best and cheapest blu-ray player on the market. However if you are playing a Blu-ray video on a standard definition TV it may be shown in black & white.
Game playing is obviously the main function of the PS3 and it does not dissapoint. The visuals and physics on most of the games released on the PS3 surpass the standards set by its predecessor by far the sheer processing and graphics rendering power of the PS3 combined with the extra capacity on Blu-ray discs provide a whole new realm of video gaming realism.
However the PS3 currently has a severe lack of games it is unacceptable the poor amount of games that launched with the console and some of the games were obviously shoddy ports from the PS2.
This problem should be solved by late 2007 - mid 2008 as many good games are set to release between these dates. Also the PS3 is compatible with most PS1 games and a big percentage of PS2 games to keep you entertained. Check on this site www.ps3comp.com to see if your games are compatible.
Summary: A very good games console and a decent multimedia player. However do not buy until xmas 2007
