Advantages: SD slot, multiple USB ports, Blu-ray player, sixaxis controllres, long controllre battery life, look
Disadvantages: 60gb can be a little noisy at times
Having bought the PS1 and PS2 there was no way I was going to turn my back on the later released PS3 to buy an Xbox 360 and I must say it was well worth the wait.
The slick look of the PS3 is stunning and everytime I see one on the TV or internet I just want to buy it, even though my current one is great working order. It really stands out as a an all round media system and wouldn't really look out of place in any area.
The graphics, loading speeds and gameplay are basically identical to the 360, but it's when you look at the extra features that the PS3 provides you start to realise just how good it is. However, I expect a slight difference in quality to eventually appear as game developers become more used to using the sophisticated PS3 hardware.
Firsty allowing online gameplay for free was a masterstroke and allowing internet browsing has also proved a good idea as it allows for more content to be downloaded.
The amount of different uses the PS3 can be put to is fantastic.
I personally find being able to just stick in a USB stick or SD Card and display your favourite photos or movies extremely useful.
The PS3 is also very compatible with many differnet devices such as bluetooth headsets, PC accessories and many moe add ons which make the system even greater avlue for money.
And then if you want that extra bit of HD quality you can just stick in blu-ray movie and enjoy.
The wireless controllers are much better than I expected them to be. I know that it wasn't only me who was expecting long charging times and low battery hold, but I was way off the mark.
The controllers reach full charge in under an hour and continue to play for around 4-6 hours.
As far as I know no big releases have been developed around the sixaxis feature, but hopefully in time it will be put to good use. And as more and more games are specifically designed only for the PS3 then I'm sure the console will go from strength to strength.
I am in no doubt the PS3 will continue to improve and with the addition of a motion sensitive "wand" arriving some time in 2010 the PS3 will be in more direct competition with the Wii aswell as the Xbox 360.
I would give the console a 10/10 and would buy it over any other console every time.
Summary: Wow!

- 09/06/08 sixaxis is now obsolete, it won't be used in the future, much better to have a simple dualshock enabled controller... |
