Advantages: Looks, Upgradable, Game Selection, Price, Performance, Online is Free
Disadvantages: Confusing Interface, Beeps When You Press Buttons On Console Panel, Gets Dirty Quickly
Ever since the launch of the PS1, Sony have lead the market of games consoles. The PS1 and PS2 were the primary choice of many people who chose to drop their loyalty to Nintendo. I was a lucky owner of a PS1 and enjoyed it for many years before switching to the dark side and buying an Xbox. After buying a 360 i realised i should never have converted.
My PS3 is the simple 40GB version. Needles to say: it is not backwards compatible which is a huge letdown. However, that is pretty much the only let down.
In terms of deign, this machine is in a league of it's own. It's classy, smooth, polished black surface suites any home cinema system and seems far more elegant and sophisticated than a 360 or Wii. The name is simple enough too, it just follows a simple order unlike the 360's "an experience that revolves around you concept" or the Wii's "community play" concept.
Underneath the bonnet is a more powerful and more capable system than the 360, and the Wii? That would be blown off the face of the earth in a competition with this! The power is noticeable as the system has never crashed, nor has it shuddered in game play. Much unlike the 360 which quite commonly experiences this problem.
The user interface is annoyingly confusing and so the points go to the 360 and Wii in this area. I'm sure there are people who have mastered it, but i simply cannot. The menus seem to run into each other.
The PS3 has a very nice ability of being able to upgrade the hard drive to a larger one, made easier as the console puts the software on the new drive automatically. So if you use the marketplace to download a game, you are guaranteed plenty of space on top of the standard 40GB.
The PS3 online experience is not quite up to the 360's standard, however, it's download store is far superior. The simple interface of the store and the vast array of content available make it a great place to buy new content, demos, trailers, old games and new games. That last feature - new games - is great. However, remember you wont have the disk, so you cant lend it to a friend or have a backup if things go pear-shaped.
Overall, you simply cannot beat the console. I have played the 360, Wii and PS3 and out of them all, i'd have the PS3.
Summary: The Only Next-Gen Choice
