Advantages: Free online gaming, reliable and great graphics
Disadvantages: Poor games library, very expensive
When I bought the Playstation 3 nearly 2 years ago, i was the only one out of my entire group of friends to choose the Playstation 3 over the much cheaper and larger game based Xbox 360.
I bought the 60 GB model for £349.99.
*Graphics*
The thing every gamer wants to see! The Playstation 3 is undoubtedly a monster in terms of creating graphics, and has the potential of producing graphics that for outweigh that of the Xbox, however, getting to see these amazing graphics is quite a problem, you will see very little difference between the Xbox and ps3 graphics in multiplatform games, games developers do not spend much time on creating games to use to the ps3's potential, and so in multiplatform games there is very little the ps3 had to boast.
On the other hand, ps3 exclusives such as Metal Gear Solid 4, resistance and Killzone 2 are created especially for the PC and so offer graphics that have graphics that the ps3 was built to create, you will find yourself dazzled at the realism of these games.
*Games library*
In 2007, when I forked out the £350 for the ps3, I had hopes like many other gamers of the ps3 being something special, this didn't quite turn out the way I expected. After spending such a huge amount of money, the ps3 gamers were treated to a tiny handful of quite poor games for the ps3, whilst the Xbox gamers whom spent almost half of what we did, were enjoying a huge gaming library of games that were all very impressive.
*Reliability*
This is the category where the ps3 shines, the ps3 has the best record of reliability of almost all consoles ever, I have not once had a problem with my ps3 (Touch wood), and am very happy with this fact. My friends who all has Xboxes all suffered break downs, one friend had £80 of games damaged and had to spend a further £60 for repair, whilst all my other friends decided to buy a ps3.
*Cost efficiency*
The ps3 is in some sense more of an investment than just a purchase, it has very little upkeep as online gaming on PSN (Playstation Network) is completely free, as opposed to Xbox 360 which charges a fee. Also as you read from the above category the ps3 is reliable and so there is little chance for the need to pay for repair.
*Basic spec*
This ps3 offers a 60 GB hard drive, and of the time I have owned the ps3 I have not once come close to filling this space up and have never had the need to delete any saved data.
This ps3 model also comes with ports for memory sticks, micro SD and CF, as well as 4 USB ports which are handy if you have two controllers charging whilst using a wired headset.
And of course theirs that little detail of course that the ps3 is a blu ray player, it is very easy to play films on the blu ray player and it comes off with fantastic HD pictures.
*Summary*
I have been very pleased with my ps3 other the last 2 years; it has provided me with many hours of entertainment, as well as hours of free online gaming.
Off the 5 friend who bought Xboxes, 3 of them now have ps3s, and so it would seem the ps3 is a good choice, but still the ps3 is an unbelievably high price for a games console.
Summary: A very expensive games console, which is great for those who can afford it.
