      Advantages

      Disadvantages

My parents bought one of these video’s about 6 weeks ago from Curry’s and although it is not one I would have chosen (due to its lack of NICAM stereo), I have been quite impressed with it’s operation and playback never-the-less, especially considering the price. The range of features on this video isn’t bad, it has index search, long play, an auto-head cleaner and is a cinch to set up using the On-Screen Display (it also comes with quite a good manual and quick-start guide). It has one SCART socket on the back and as I mentioned before is mono. The remote control is pretty well designed and about the right size, it also looks like some thought has gone into the layout of the buttons and it is easy to use. There is a slightly more expensive model that has VideoPlus (which this one does not), but to be honest I cannot see the point of having it anyway, the video timer is really easy too set and Videoplus is not really necessary on this video (actually I can’t see the point of VideoPlus anyway, my parents last video had it, and three of mine had it, and it was never used, as it was easier to set the timer than mess about with codes). For the price it is very good value for money (a shade under £70), especially if stereo sound is not a requirement (my parents only have a mono TV set and aren’t bothered about stereo). The picture may not be up to the quality of more expensive VCR’s, but it is better than you would normally expect from a video in this price range, and anyway, what do you expect for £70? So if you just want a cheap recorder to time shift programs and watch a tape then it is worth considering. It is not worth buying an extended warranty on it (which will doubtless be offered), because at this price you can just throw it away and start again after a couple of years (I recommend buying on a credit card that gives an extra years insurance free such as Nationwide or Barclaycar
d, then after two years if it goes wrong it has cost less than £35 a year). ***When looking at my ratings, bare in mind I have taken the price into account***
