Advantages: A Cheap & Comprehensive Package, Easy To Use, Offers Peace Of Mind.

Disadvantages: Problems With Definition Updates, Yahoo Toolbar.

The Internet is a wonderful thing that gives you access to a world of information from your personal computer. However like most things, the Internet can be a dangerous place. With hackers, spyware, and viruses at almost every turn putting you at risk from identity fraud, corrupt data, junk emails and worms. You must protect yourself at any cost. OK, maybe it's not quite as dramatic as that, but most of us will agree that some sort of security suite is desirable.

I have been using the freeware version of AVG anti-virus for a number of years now, and for the most part I found that it offered me good protection against viruses. I would usually pair it up with a stand along freeware firewall such as ZoneAlarm. So why did I then upgrade to AVG Internet Security. Simply because I wanted something that offered me more rounded and comprehensive protection than my current setup. I was hoping that this software package would give me that, and despite a few problems detailed below it has.

I know a few people who have had trouble installing this version of AVG, but I found the installation of the package was easy and reasonable quick. AVG Internet Security doesn't seem to noticeable drain any system resources or slow me down in anyway (unlike McAfee which made my system grind to a haul.) The user interface is simple, well laid out and easy to understand. For the most part the package simply runs happily in the background and requires little user input.

After the definitions updated themselves I thought that I was set and ready to go. However I decided that I would make sure that the program was up to date, so I did a manual update and it downloaded even more updates which for some reason took nearly twenty minutes. I thought it was strange that it hadn't automatically downloaded these updates, perhaps you are better updating the program yourself rather than relying on the auto update feature. I somehow managed to install a Yahoo tool-bar during the installation of AVG, which is something I didn't really want, so I had to spend some time removing it. I've never had that major a problem with spam emails so sadly I can't comment on the effectiveness of AVG's spam filter.

The bottom line is that the software does what it promises, offering real-time online security to keep you and your computer safe. Overall, I thought that this is a reasonably good package for a reasonably good price. If you are on a budget it is ideal as it offers more protection than the free version.

I tried AVG, but in the end went for ZoneAlarm and haven't looked back.

I'm not really sure what the advantages are of paying for this over having the free version?
