Advantages: Great Security System That Does The Same Job As Payed For Systems For Free
Disadvantages: Advertisments For Updated Version
In the modern world, viruses are an almost necessary evil in the interner world, and as such you are going to need some degree of protection. But then with times a bit tight and the need to cut down on expenses necessary, anything that you can get for free is a huge bonus, and this is one of the best free pieces of software around. Yep, you heard me, this great piece of security is 100% free, although you will have to suffer a couple of adverts, but that is a small price to pay for what you get.
This security system comes with AntiVira Guard, which is your basic protection and will stop any viruses infecting your computer, and if it does detect one, then you will be allowed to either destory it, place it in 'quarantine', where it can be thoroughly checked, or let it through, although i am not entirely sure why you would want to use the final option. You are also able to scan your computer, which involves going through each fiile and checking its safety to your system, this for me takes between 30 minutes and 1 hour, depending upon whether or not I am using the computer and the amount of files taht you use. This compared t many other company's offerings is not that bad, allowing you to still use your computer with minimal slowdown. But if you don't have time for that, then the system automatically scans the system in the background when files are altered to check them, and any sign of this is not noticed, unless it finds something, when a message providing you with the options for the file is given.
Then we come to its update potential, which for this is very good, and is carried out each day, with the program connecting to its main site and checking whether or not the program is up to date with all of the recent knwon threats, which is usually about one or two a day, or a few more if you haven't used your computer in a few days. This is carried out quickly, and a small window displaying the progress of the update pops up, and will automatically disappear around ten seconds after the update is finished. But then after the update has been completed, you will then get an advert for the premium version of the system, which costs about £30, and offers a few more features and what they say is better protection, but then i have never found any problems with it. This is the only downside of this free system, but the window that comes up to display an advert for the upgraded program can simply be exited straight away, and as this will only happen once a day at most, it is not the biggest negative, and a small price to pay for the level of protection that is provided.
I have tried a couple of other security programs, many of them which you need to pay for, but i have never found any that do much more than this for the same value, and as such have this on both my laptop and my main desktop computer. And for anyone worrying that this won't be compatible with vista, be afraid no longer, as they have released a vista usuable version, which i use and offers the same features, although the bonus of it being used on vista. I would recommend this to anyone that wants a good simple security program, but i would say that unless you also possess some other security, as offered by vista and firefox etc. then you may be better off looking at a pay for system, as that will give you the extra protection, or simply look into getting other programs that provide these features.

- 05/06/09 I enjoyed your thorough review of this very good free product which I have been using for many year after changing from AVG Free which hogged memory. A little tip for anyone not liking the nag screen, a simple Google search to remove the nag screen from a website called elite killer is just what you need. |
