      I won't be renewing

      I purchased Bitdefender in August last year as it was well reviewed and seemed good value. I have been looking forward to when the licence expired ever since, being too mean to drop it and buy something else! Ever since I installed it on two computers, mine and my wife's, it has slowed them down to the point where we have felt like throwing the machines out of the window! Launching a browser took up to 15 minutes sometimes. Things got a little better after 8 months when we decided to go back to IE instead of Firefox but it was still grim. Their telephone help line seemed promising but I was just told to uninstall and reinstall or try disabling the anti phishing tool with no follow-up. I have to say that at least we did not get infected with any viruses, so it did what it promised! It also prompted me that I had automatic renewal by credit card, although I usually try to avoid that, and it was easy to cancel the renewal. I lost interest in trying to pursue speeding it up and am now looking forward to the chance to buy a new product. Any suggestions? I can use the "free" software that is bundled with a Talktalk broadband account but am looking for a review of that as I realise that free is not always best value.

      {~~~Installation~~~}

      I have a very new computer with some of the latest hardware. Therefore, I expected the installation to be a breeze. Perhaps my expectations were so high as I have been using Norton 360, for which the installation process was completely painless and only took a couple of minutes.

      During installation, I was prompted to remove any other secutity software in order to ensure that there was no conflict between them. I'd recommend this as I have had problems in the past. However, fortunately, you are given the option to leave the current security software installed and intact on the PC. This could be seen as a postivie feature as many security programs will refuse to install if there are other programs installed which could cause conflict.

      You are provided with the option of doing a custom-installation or a basic one. I would only recommend the custom installation for people who are experienced. If you do go for the custom-installation, it does go into a lot of depth about what you would like to be installed. The basic option uses the default installation settings.

      I was offered to choose the interface that I would like. This included: Basic, Intermediate, and Expert. I opted for intermediate. The option that you select here determines the options that will be available to you on the software console. The more advanced option you choose, the more advanced options and setting will be mae available to you. This option is not permanent and can be easily changed at a later date as you become more confortable and experienced with the settings.

      I was then prompted to do a cloud-based scan of my PC. This would essentially scan for any existing threats on my computer, collaborating with the online database on Bitdefender's side. This did not take as much time as I expected: it took approximately three minutes on my computer. However, this will depend on the hardware configuaration of individual computers. I doubt it would take more than ten minutes on most computers. Although this step is not compulsory, I would recommend it in order to eliminate any existing threats as soon as possible. What else is the software for?

      There are many prompts throughout the installation process. I would highly recommend selecting the basic interface option in order to speed it up, as the interface can be modifed later, as can the settings.

      The installation process finally ends with the option of scheduling regular virus scans, which I would recommend.

      {~~~Secutity Console Interface~~~}

      I found that the basic interface was a bit too restrictive. I had to jump through a lot of hoops to get to the more advanced settings. However, it is probably ideal for novice users.

      The interface is a bit messy, but you soon get used to it. The status details appear on the left hand side, and this is a useful feature to check up and make sure everything is running smoothly.

      I have found that this secutity software does hog more resources than norton 360, but it is not so bad that it affects the speed of the computer so much.

      I would recommend that you swicth to the advanced interface as soon as you feel comfortable with it, or straight away if you know what you are doing, as the basic interface is a little too basic, whilst the intermediate just looks clumsy.

      N.B. I have also published this review of mine on Amazon.co.uk as SuPeRsOnIc

      Thanks For Reading

      This is the latest version of BitDefender Internet Security offering a three user, one year subscription for a bargain price when compared to rivals.

      Program features are exactly what you should expect to find and the software offers the ability to protect viruses, online fraud, hackers, identity theft, and the surge of spam.

      BitDefender has always been an easy program to use and to learn, and this version continues that tradition. It offers three tabs comprising of "Beginner, Intermediate and Expert" each with different options. Every function and ability can be managed from the user-friendly interface and will appeal to computer novices or those who don't want to be drowned in a software sea of options.

      The firewall works well - blocking what it should and not blocking what it shouldn't. I have had trouble in the past with firewalls not allowing trusted sources access to the Internet (such as Adobe updater, or Battlenet), and in the past I've always had to spend time creating rules for everything. Thankfully it wasn't necessary this time around.

      Installing the software was problem free but a bit time consuming. It was necessary to complete a system scan (strangely with outdated definition files) before you could continue. It was also necessary to restart the computer after the scan was complete before installation was continuing, and again when everything was installed. You also have to enter a short registration key as well as some personal details.

      When the software runs in the background it keeps itself happy and doesn't make a noticeable difference on system resources. However when you are actually scanning your computer things grind to a halt. Recently many companies such as Norton and other rivals has developed their software to be more resource friendly in this way and its a shame that BitDefender hasn't also took this onboard.

      I was happy to see a "Game Mode" which is essentially a mute button for the software should you be at a critical moment in a game, you can rest assure that you won't be disturbed by a pop-up box.

      Sadly there is no virtual keyboard (something I've grown to like) which is a useful tool for entering bank-details or passwords online. It would have offered an extra safe guard should something like a key logger have by-passed your defenses.

      All things considered BitDefender offers great value for money and reasonably comprehensive protection. There are a few problems which rob the software from a five star rating, however it is still an improvement on previous versions and well worth considering if on a budget.

      You can buy this software from Amazon.co.uk for the cost of £28.71 (price correct at time of publishing.)
