Is this new? Is it better than the virus scan? I dont know the answer to the first of these questions but I was having problems with the latest version of Macafee virus scan and Internet explorer 5.5 when I came across this little gem. It is a web based virus shield and scanner that relies on Macafee to update the info and it shields and scans your computer from the web. This has two main advantages,a) you are always up to date and b) you need a smaller and less clumsy programme on you hard drive. The disadvantages are that you need to be on line to run a scan on your hard drive. The system still sheilds your computer all the time and will protect you from downloaded and emailed viruses. It works well with IE 5.5 and it is cheap at $29.95 to enrol. This is the lazy mans virus scanner and will keep up to date automatically and if net costings are of nbo concern to you then I really do recommend this.
Despite having a computer only a short time, and with McAfee to hopefully kill the deadly viruses on my e-mails, the KAK.Worm penetrated my defences. In fact we must have had the virus for some time, as the computer kept doing strange things, like failing to respond to start ups properly, and the colours being unable to be changed. Also, e-mails sometimes went in Outlook express and sometimes they didn't, the same problem also with receiving them.Unfortunately every time I sent a e-mail, prsumably the recepient was infected with the KAK virus. Help was at hand after reading an old back issue of Computeractive, where someone wrote in and asked how they could get ris of it. The answer was to use KAK CLEANER, to be found from www.getvirushelp.com/kak. Downloading this will erase it, and get rid of problems when you start up the computer.
I have been subscribing to the online McAfee virus program for the last two years now and in the main have been very happy with it. You can pay on line over a secure server and it is hassle free. It does take some time to initially download the components but rest assured once loaded you can set it to work in the background the whole time you have your pc on. You can also set it up so that when you are usually on line it becomes active to download new stuff and tell you about any new viruses and their risk in terms of low, medium and high risk. This is very useful as it keeps you aware of any new nasties in the woodwork/cyberspace!! We did have some problems near to the millenium as it appeared to be working overtime!!*LOL*... but this was a small price to pay considering the worry and fear that people had about that time. It can if you have it set to checking absolutely everything make the pc run a little slow!! There are several options for you to access with regard to virus checking such as receiving a regular newsletter informing you of new viruses and also information about hoax's. In addition you can subscribe to other services such as firewalls if you wish. It is easy to use and there is quite a lot of information available.
