Advantages: Free and easy to use

Disadvantages: Does not detect all spyware that is out there

Spybot S&D 1.6 is designed to detect and remove spyware. If your browser crashes or your home page has suddenly been changed then your computer has probably been infected by some sort of spyware which Spybot will detect and destroy like it says on the tin.
Some key features of Spybot include the safe removal of threats by shredding them, removal of keyloggers,detailed information about problems found, integrated update function, and permanent blocking of known tracking cookies.
The interface is skinnable which is a nice touch but not essential, and the entire suite is free unless you want to make a donation to the authors of the programme.
As spyware removers go this suite detects most of the spyware out there but not all of it. And it can struggle to remove detected items at times.
Overall as a free spyware removal suite goes this is a useful back up defence of spyware but should not be used alone without any other type of detector because as I stated previously it does not detect all the nasties that are out there.

Summary: A good back up facility which should be used with other scanners as it does not find all the spyware
