Advantages: Just brilliant

Disadvantages: none its soooperb

A recent viral infection on my computer caused me no end of grief. I used several well known anti virus packages and several lesser known. I also scoured the net for malware protection. After every reboot I found that a newer virus had sneaked onto my PC.

As it turns out it was a viral infection that reproduces sibling files which sit dormant until an anti virus program removes the mother. Then like any good children they fight to protect by doing exactly the same as the parent virus, hence a vicious circle of grief and mayhem.

As many of you are probably aware there is NO such thing as the perfect protection. Sometimes you need two pieces of software to complete the job. I was running PC Guard from Virgin media and found in general it was pretty good until this latest attack. I uninstalled PC guard and downloaded the newer version to no avail. Another net search was called for and this time I got lucky. A free download of what has turned out to be an absolute life saver. Simply Google SUPER antiSpyware and the link will be there.

A quick free and simple download now to see if it was up to the mark. On first installing you are given the option to upgrade to the premium package, but I declined and just used the standard version. The first run was very slow since it checked everything, and I mean everything.

The user interface is very easy to use and from it you can change any parameters and options you wish. There are a few exceptions, which can only be, enable disable from the premium package, but as of yet I have had no need of them. This initial screen has the following options available.

1. Scan your Computer
2. Scheduled scanning
3. Check for updates
4. Manage Quarantines
5. Preferences

Option 1 Scan your computer pretty much speaks for itself, being that from here you get to do a quick scan or a complete scan. You also get to select the area of your hard drive you wish to scan.

Option 2 Scheduled Scanning also is self explanatory, since this is where you can set up SUPER antiSpyware to scan your selected drive area at a specific time and date.

As you are now becoming aware all the options are easy to understand and interpret so checking for updates and quarantine management should be no problem.

The last option Preferences opens another smaller window, which gives you a selection of options along its top edge. Also the inner portion of the window has criteria, which require ticking or un-ticking depending on your preferences. The main items for investigation on the top menu are

1. Start up/ General
2. Scanning Control
3. Real time Protection
4. Hi Jack protection
5. Statistics/Logs
6. Repairs
7. Updates
8. Help

Again most are self-explanatory, but you might find that repairs is a very interesting area to investigate. Here you can repair all those little windows hiccups that virus create to enable their control. Unfortunately when you rid your PC of the virus the settings have already been changed and unless you are proficient at changing registry entries your goosed, or at least you were until this little baby came along. One of the main things I found here was that my option to view hidden folders had disappeared and windows was having nothing to do with helping me on the subject. Not that windows help is actually much good at anything. After clicking the option in SUPOER antiSpyware the option was repaired and I was in business again. There are lots of other neat bits in this section and if for no other reason than sorting out these little quirks it's worth the download.

I now use this regularly to check my system and I've had no problems for months now. I am still running PC guard, but use this as a regular check of my memory, registry and hard drive. It always finds those little annoying cookies in fact it always finds anything that is wrong. I would definitely recommend downloading and checking it out. If you use WinPatrol switch it off first since for some strange reason it thinks its spyware. It's definitely NOT it's clean safe and excellent.
