Advantages: Keeps your PC Free of Viruses
I use Norton AntiVirus both at home on my own PC and at work on the 1800+ PCs that we support.
I think this is a brilliant product, the installation is simple and straight forward, the defaults are set to give you a good degree of protection against virus attacks, so most novices don’t need to do anything else. There is good documentation on the CD that will tell you all about Viruses and how to protect against them, it also explains all the different options you can set and what they do.
Keeping it up to date is simple, Symantec release a new definition file every week, most people probably don’t want to bother downloading that often, but the files are there. They also release a new file every time a major new threat is detected. Unlike some virus products out there this product only downloads the bits that have changed. Some other products you have to download the virus engine and that could mean downloading several megabytes on information, Norton Anti Virus downloads are usually a few hundred KB. You update the definitions using a tool called Live Update, this will use your existing ISP and you can use the Internet while it runs in the background.
Because I do a lot of surfing and work from home I do update my definitions every week, it only takes a few minutes and I have the knowledge that I am protected against all the latest nasties out there.
When you buy the product you get a years subscription to the updates included, when that year has run out, you just need to renew your subscription for updates. It costs about £2.50 a year, this will not break the bank.
It also had additional features such as the bloodhound technology that detects unknown viruses. It knows what to look and if it thinks that something looks suspicious it will quarantine it so it can not damage your PC. You can then submit that file to the Symantec AntiVirus Research Center (SARC) they will analyze the file and if it is a n
ew virus they can usually produce a new definition file to detect and repair the new virus.
This product also links into all popular email products so that your emails get scanned before they can do any damage to your PC.
There is a whole range of Anti Virus products out there some are free some are cheaper and some are more expensive. I have tried a number of products, but In my experience, this is the best I could find. It has detected all of the sample viruses we have thrown at it, it is cheep and easy to install and maintain and has all the features to keep your PC clean and virus free.
My advice is go out and buy it, no one on the internet can afford to be without virus protection and this is the best money can buy.
