Advantages: Offers complete virus protection. Only costs £25
Disadvantages: Useless if not kept up-to-date
Well, OK, your computer won't literaly die but many of the latest viruses are potential fatal to your system. Norton AntiVirus is the world's leading anti virus software, brought to you by Symantec, one of the largest computer utilities manufacturers. It's a very reliable piece of software and provides all that you need to protect your computer from the literaly thousands of virus out there. It costs around £25, with that you get 365 days worth of virus updating. By this I mean, you can go to there website and download the latest virus definitions so that your computer has optomum protection. The program itself can be configured to scan your computer everytime it starts up. This adds upto 2 minutes of extra start-up time to your system. It can also be configured to automatically scan ALL email attachments for viruses (as this is the easiest and fastest way, viruses are spread). It also comes with the facility to create a boot disk, with the smiliar function of the windows boot disks, although this particular one is geared towards rescuing your system if it has been infested with a difficult virus that is effecting the stability of your system. The some what obvious main feature of this program is it's full scan of your hard disk for viruses. The first time I ran this approx. 2 years ago, it found three different viruses! Since then, some of my friends have asked me to install the program for them on their system and 5 out of 6 of them also had at least one virus on their system, all of which have caused some problems that they had never previously been able to work out. What happens if Norton finds a virus? ************************************* Good question! What it does is - it gives you the option of having it automatically deleted (if possible) or it will prompt you to put into quaranteen if there is no available cure. You can then send the corrupted/infected fil
es to Symantec and they will provide a cure. The one problem with software like this is that it's only effective if the user makes sure that all the virus definitions are up-to-date. If not, then the software is pretty much useless. To keep the software up-to-date, all you need do is run the 'live update' feature within the program. This will connect with the Symantec server and download the latest virus defenitions. I would recommend that everyone invests in an anti virus program, especially this particular one. It is made and maintained by a respectable company with very skilled, reliable staff. GO GET IT NOW!!!

- 22/08/01 I would rate this op higher if it did not sound like an advert for norton. There are other equally good and perhaps better programs, such as PC Cillin 2000, McAffee and so on.
I have had Norton, McAffee and other installed for years and have never found or intercepted a virus, and I think that a firewall like Zonealarm is as relevant if not more so. I regularly detect attempted hacking with Zonealarm. |
