Please note that although I am a registered nurse and I actually work on a rheumatology ward, this review is purely my personal opinion / experience and should be taken as such. I have had bad knees since I was 16 years old, caused by at that time, I suspect, poor patient lifting techniques and exacerbated by long hikes. Over the years bizarrely if I'm tired my knees seem to hurt far more and cause difficulty in sleeping due to the aching I experience. I also, at my worst times, literally click / crunch up the stairs, this is particularly bad when at work as its 96 steps up to my floor and I always take the stairs rather than the lift. The area I work deals with many rheumatology patients and I remember a patient recommending these and at that time thinking it was worth a go. The result is by no means dramatic but gradually after a few weeks I notably feel better, and the crunching stops which also seems to get rid of the ache. I can quite literally tell when I stop taking them, I have just recently been very sporadic and have just started my strict once a day tablet a few days ago when I realised that I was audibly creaking again. My husband fell off a ladder (at work) several years ago and I actively encouraged him to take and he also felt the same benefits. A couple of years ago he complained that his back was terrible again, and I asked him if he was still taking them, and because we'd moved house, he hadn't realised where they were now stored and hadn't taken them in several months. He quickly resumed and his symptoms disappeared. Cod Liver oil is derived from the liver of cod fish. Being high in fatty acids omega -3. It has some proven scientific benefit, as a quick google comes up with research undertaken and published in 2002 by Cardiff scientists. They confirmed the age-old belief that cod liver oil is good for the joints, and that taking the supplement could delay or even reverse the destruction of joint cartilage and inflammatory pain associated with arthritic disease. They even go as far as saying it could even delay joint replacement surgery. "Not only does cod liver oil reduce pain and inflammation in the joints of people with osteoarthritis but we now know it also turns off the enzymes responsible for destroying cartilage. The BBC's Duncan Kennedy stated that "An old remedy with a new lease of life" And "We're delighted that something as simple and non-controversial as cod liver oil has the potential to bring relief and restore quality of life to so many people who suffer from osteoarthritis." I buy mine from asda or home bargains as they all seem to be much the same, so I don't actually have a preferred brand bar "the cheapest". Asda currently sell these 550mg capsules come in packs of 200 for £3.50 (1.8p each) with a deal for buying 3 for £10 being currently advertised. I am only 40 and take no other medication or supplements but I do honestly believe in these capsules, my in laws are now also converted. Definitely worth a go if you have issues with joints. Its a 5 from me..
I have been having joint pain for the last few year and i've tried lots of wonderful solution to the problem and this was just another one. At Around about five pounds for 60 I thought that it was a cheap solution to the problem . But I thought that if they worked it would great. The tablets themselves I thought we've that bad to take and were simple very easy.This was especially due to the soft shell nature of them and as a result swallowing like with many hard capsules was incredibly easy.. But I did find that if I did bit into them by accident the taste of the oil which I can only assume is some sort of fish. After taking the hoping that my dry skin who be at least helped by the tablets but they simple did nothing to help me personally and I can say they truly didn't help me. And although I'm shore they were very good for my general health I found that there were very few general health benefits for me. But I have seen now that generally there is a lot me success from people who are around 30 years older than myself.So I think the advise is that I will try them again when I'm older. So overall I think that these tablets are not going to be the solution to my problem for the conditions that I have now I think that taking them when i'm young I hope will help me live a much more healthy life . As the tablet do claim to to be supported by evidence and due to not taking other supplements I'm shore if anything they can help make up for the lack of fish that I have in my diet .
I remember having Cod Liver Oil being forced down my throat as a child with that very unhelpful adage of "It's good for you". Of course, as a child I didn't really appreciate that Cod Liver Oil was good for me.....and to be honest I didn't really care either!! However, as an adult, I take my health much more seriously - and so it's back to the Cold Liver Oil.....and this time I'm now forcing it down my own throat! I tend to take Boots Pharmaceuticals Cod Liver Oil (1000mg). Each bottle contains 30 capsules and costs £2.99 and as it's only one capsule a day then this equates to a months supply for £2.99 (or 10p per capsule). I think this is really good value - especially as it's from a brand I trust. Also, as it comes in capsule form it means that you can take the oil without having to taste it.....which for anyone who has ever tasted Cod Liver Oil is a very good thing! These particular capsules have a foil security lid so you can also be sure that they have been protected following manufacturing. Cod Liver Oil is very rich in Omega 3 Fatty Acids which helps to keep joints flexible and supple - which I find has become even more important as I've got older. It also contains Vitamin A and Vitamin D which is necessary for the maintenance of bones, skin and eyes. I certainly think that as I've got older I've needed to take better care of my joints because I do find that I am more prone to getting stiff after a long day working - or even having taking the dogs for a long walk. I do have particularly good skin for my age and good overall health and so I attribute this partly to the Cod Liver Oil. Obviously, because I have been taking these for about the last ten years its difficult to say exactly how much they help because I've been taking them for such a long time and so I don't have anything to compare it to - but I certainly don't think they can hurt - and as there are no side effects then why not?
Other people in my family take the mick out of me and my mom saying we take so many tablets and capsules that are surprised we don't rattle when we walk. But to be fair I do take a lot of vitamins and supplements on a daily basis - when I remember anyway because they all have very different uses and can help all different parts of the body. Cod liver oil capsules though are something Ive been taking for years along with most of my family because they have a wide variety of health benefits associated with them and Id rather take one capsule that will help with loads of things rather than a whole bunch - I think I would actually rattle then! Cod liver oil capsules can be bought quite cheaply from places like Holland & Barrett. We personally get 500 capsule bottle and they have a buy one get one half price offer on currently. As far as I know you only need to take one capsule per day to get the full effects. And whatever you do don't bite into the capsule because the liquid inside is really disgusting and you will regret it - trust me on this one! Health Benefits: I personally take these capsules because I heard once that they were good for helping nourish your hair, skin and nails making them appear in better condition and over time heal any problems that you had in the first place - whether or not they actually work for that purpose later! People also take these for many other reasons including: they are said to have positive effects on the heart and bones, can help people who suffer with arthritis, can serve as a long term treatment for multiple sclerosis, the capsules contains high levels of vitamin A & D & if you take them whilst pregnant it lowers the risk of your baby having type 1 diabetes. So as you can see there are loads of reasons why taking a capsule like this once a day could be really good for you and even though I don't take it for most of those reasons I'm happy to know I could be helping my heart and bones along as that may not be something I need to worry about now but in years to come it might be - prevention is better than cure as they say. Does It Work For Me? I few years back I made the decision to stop biting my nails because they were in terrible condition and it was just after that, that I started taking these capsules to try and repair some of the damage I had done. Ive been taking these on and of for a good 3 years now and I think the difference in my skin, hair and best of all nails is amazing. My hair is still slightly damaged but that is down to heat appliances and I do think this helps protect my hair as even hairdressers say to me someone with hair as long as mine who uses straighteners everyday should have really damaged hair and I don't, my skin isn't perfect but its a damn sight better than it used to be - I used to have eczema quite badly on my arms and I haven't suffered with that since I started taking these & my nails are in much better condition and sometimes actually grow a few inches so for the 3 reasons I take these they do work. I'm sure about the many other uses because those aren't the reasons I personally take them! Side Effects: As with any vitamin or supplement there can be side effects - these are actually very rare and I have never personally suffered with any of them they are written purely as a warning! * Vitamin A overdose * Although the reduce the risk of diabetes whilst pregnant it can increase the risk of other diseases/birth defects * Only buy from reputable sellers as these capsules can contain high levels of toxins if they are not checked properly. Other than that though Ive had a really good experience while taking these and I would recommend them - always check with your doctor if you are worried about side effects though! One of my most vivid memories as a kid was the horror of having to take a spoonful of Cod Liver Oil every morning at home (thanks mum). It used to make me dread getting up, simply because the taste of that vile liquid, no matter what mum said, could not possibly have had any good come out of it. Or could it? I used to remember retching at the liquid, but thankfully taking Cod Liver Oil in liquid format is no longer necessary since the invention of Cod Liver Oil Capsules. Unless you make the fatal mistake of biting into one of the capsules, people these days can completely avoid this foul tasting supplement. Made from an oil from the livers of cos (well at least it's accurately named) this health supplement is not suitable for vegetarians, who have to turn to glucosamine sulphate instead for similar benefits, but it's still a very popular dietary add on. The Cod Liver Oil contains lots of healthy vitamins A and D, so it's beneficial to people who don't have much of this in their diet naturally. Another benefit to Cod Liver Oil is it's high concentrations of Omega 3 fatty acids, which scientists claim offer health benefits such as relieving stiff joints, improving skin condition, maintaining a healthy heard and being good for the brain in general. I have not taken Cod Liver Oil capsules for some time now, but I really should get back onto them as I've noticed over a few months that my joints feel a little worse since not taking daily Cod Liver Oil tablets. I used to take the ones from Boots where you got 30 tablets in a bottle for just a few pounds, and I should be back onto these soon if I can remember to buy them! The capsules are easy to take and I have never had any problems swallowing them as they are only small. Cod's liver and chips please! You don't usually go down to the shops and think 'I must get a nice bit of cod's liver for dinner,' yet we swear by capsules of the stuff. I started taking it about a year ago, on and off. I am not very disciplined with vitamins and supplements. I get into the swing of things by ordering a batch of stuff from Healthy Direct or Holland And Barrett and then I take them for a few weeks and then forget to buy them again! Cod liver oil is intensely rich in essential omega three fatty acids, which helps joints move fluidly. It is also a great way to get some Vitamin D and Vitamin A into the diet. The capsules I had were golden in colour and looked like swollen tablets of honey. I actually rather liked the smell too, which smelt a little bit glucose like and sweet. Popped into the mouth, the glucose taste is confirmed and the outer shell tastes rather yummy. I know you supposed to swallow them whole with water, but sometimes I allow myself to bite slightly on the soft shell, releasing a small droplet of the fluid. Then I hurridly swallow it! Have I noticed any difference in overall health? Well I took an entire jar of one hundred tablets over a period of a month or two and I have to say that within this time span the tablets did seem to boost my overall immune system. I am not sure I can pinpoint whether they helped my joints perform better, but I got fewer colds and dismal days and my mood swings were also a little better. I also noticed an improvement in skin condition and a balance of oils on my face. Whether or not this is a plaebo effect it is difficullt to tell, but it is scientifical fact that fish oils do aid the body in staying supple and healthy, so I agree with taking them. Also, I do not eat as much fish as I should, so this is another good way to get the nutrients from a reliable source. I shall continue to buy in the meantime and recommend them as a supplement for overall well being.
Cod Liver Oil is something my mum used to make me have when I was a kid, luckily they had brought the capsules out by then but she told me that when SHE was little she used to have to take a spoon of it and apparently it was disgusting!!! Taking Cod Liver Oil capsules is something that has stayed with me even though I don't take any other vitamin tablets or anything like that. When I was at school I used to love gymnastics and I remember my brill PE teacher telling me that I shouldn't moan at having to take my daily capsule because it's so good for your joints. There's LOADS of reasons why you should take Cod Liver Oil, most recently the main benefit is said to be Omega-3 oil because that is good for your brain as well as your overall health. There is also Vitamin D and Vitamin A in Cod Liver Oil, this is why it was originally given to children because the Vitamin D helped stop them developing rickets. There are all different brands that you can buy but I remember watching a programme once and it said that the cheaper brands would only effect the TASTE and not the overall goodness of the Cod Liver Oil. The ones I buy come in a tub of 35 from the chemist by me, they haven't even GOT a brand name and are just called Cod Liver Oil Capsules. They cost me £1.29 a tub and at one capsule a day that's a months supply but if you buy Seven Seas or any of the other big brands you can end up paying double that. I have had Seven Seas in the past and can say the only difference is that the cheapo Cod Liver Oil capsules will leave a bit of a funny taste in your mouth. It's not a fishy taste or anything like that but I think it's the quality of the rubbery capsule that gives you that taste because it definately doesn't happen with the more expensive brands. It's good for a lot of different things, patients with arthritis can take it and it will help ease the pain in their joints and studies have even shown that people with cancer can be helped by taking a dose of Cod Liver Oil. If you are pregnant taking Cod Liver Oil can help you from developing diabetes and it's good for mothers who are breastfeeding because it gives the milk a more fatty texture. I will ALWAYS take Cod Liver Oil, never as a liquid off a spoon because that is RANK but the capsules will definately always have a place in my medicine cabinet. One bad thing is that if you burp not long after taking a Cod Liver Oil capsule you'll get a nasty oily taste in your mouth..... mmmmmm, lovely!!! Recommended!!!

Cod liver oil (from here on in known as 'CLA') is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids (great for maintaining a healthy heart, brain and joints), plus it contains a decent amount of; 1. Vitamin A - vital for healthy skin, hair and nails. 2. Vitamin D - helps maintain healthy bones and teeth. 3. Vitamin E - good for its antioxidant properties. Many people take cod liver oil to ease joint stiffness and arthritic bones, whilst others take it as a way of increasing their vitamin count for the day. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Buying Options - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Cod liver oil can be purchased in either capsule form or as a liquid. I think that the variety which you choose will ultimately depend on whether you can stand the taste of the stuff or not - personally I don't like swigging on oily-fish-liquid, hence my choice of the capsules. When it comes to brands, I normally buy either the Healthspan or Holland & Barratt variety, as both makes claim to use high quality ingredients - Healthspan in particular are said to sell the purest CLA in the country. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Prices - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - From health food shops and pharmacists you can usually pick up a bottle of one-hundred and-eighty CLA capsules for under £5, although the higher quantities (360 and 720 capsules) are generally more cost effective. I personally find that the Healthspan prices are the cheapest, yet I find their capsules a little harder to swallow. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Allergy Advice - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Normally, CLA capsules are free from sweeteners, preservatives, milk, starch, lactose, soya, wheat, and gluten - but they can sometimes contain a particular ingredient which is derived from nuts - so watch out for that if you've got an allergy. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Final Word - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Personally I would recommend taking a daily Cod Liver Oil capsule, although, whether you do so or not depends on your lifestyle, and what other supplements you are already taking. Personally, I have found that since taking CLA capsules, my body has ached less after playing active sports, and that can only be a good thing - remember though, supplements are in no way a substitute for a balanced diet!
Cod Liver Oil is something that my granny swore by, mind you she swore by lots of lotions and potions that we probably wouldn't want to inflict on ourselves these days, such as washing your hair in beer (which actually produces lovely soft and shiny hair) or rubbing in some raw egg white onto your scalp, to make your hair grow..Yuk! But back in the day, every child including myself seemed to have a daily routine of talking a concoction of grannies recommended health giving potions and pills. According to our mums the combination worked for them, as granny had reminded them of that often, so would work for us! ********************************************************** I recall having a daily spoonful of Potters Malt Extract (which includes vitamin B) as a supplement, which was a horrid, thick, dark brown liquid. Also the herbal tasting mid brown Brewers Yeast Tablets which also seem to have B vitamins in them. The final and most revolting tasting of all was a spoonful of Cod Liver Oil, which was so hard to get down if you didn't swallow it quick enough that it could make you retch. The oil was a light yellow, nasty slightly fishy tasting mix and it was something I had to gulp down quickly as I really didn't like it. I often wondered why we all had to take these things as most of my friends had a similar morning ritual. This seemed only slightly enhanced, when the idea of giving children a chewable vitamin C tablet came into vogue and we were all much happier finishing off our daily supplements routine, after that as it got rid of the fishy after taste of the cod liver oil. ********************************************************** The thing is that Cod Liver Oil is exactly that, its an oil made from the livers of many Cod fish! I wont go into the way its made but I can say that Cod Liver Oil has some great health benefitting stuff within it. There are high amounts of both vitamin A and vitamin D in the oil. Many moons ago vitamin D was given to children as it could be helpful for the prevention of rickets. Maybe thats what stuck in my grannys mind about Cold Liver Oil, when she started to give it to her children, who later gave the oil to theirs. Cod Liver Oil also has high concentrations of Omega 3 fatty acids, which have been proven to offer some health benefits and can help with stiff joints, nourish your skin, protect the heart (but are not recommended for some patients with known heart problems) promote brain development and offer a variety of other general health benefits. ********************************************************** If you can't stick with taking the oil, then these days you can take the oil in a capsule, which means that the taste of the oil is masked and sealed away in the capsule. The capsules are small in size, with a clear coating and you can see the yellow Cod Liver Oil within. They are simple to take with a glass of water and slip down easily due to their slight oval shape. Taking one capsule daily is all you need and if taken regularly the Cod LIver Oil can be very beneficial to you. I must admit that I do take them on and off, but am not thoughtful enough to take them every day. But I have noticed that my nails seem to grow stronger when I take Cod Liver Oil capsules more regularly, which is a pleasing effect for sure. ********************************************************** I find that sometimes when you have taken them, even though the oil is in a capsule you can still end up with a slightly fishy taste if you have burped, which isn't very nice and I find that really off putting. I know that having taken garlic tablets, these can have the same after taste and effects and I don't like that either. So thats something to think about when deciding if you want to take them. Cod Liver Oil is not recommended for taking when pregnant. This is mainly due to the high vitamin A content in the oil, as this is known to be harmful to your growing baby in high doses and should be avoided. High doses of synthetic vitamin A, known as Retinoids have caused birth defects. So this is really to be avoided if you are pregnant or planning to start a family. ********************************************************** You should also avoid Cod Liver Oil if you have any issues with blood clotting and are on blood thinners for health reasons unless told you are ok to take them by your GP. I buy the cheap Boots brand Cod Liver Oil capsules and it clearly states this on the pack. Its always worth asking a GP or pharmacist about any does and don'ts prior to purchasing, as they will be able to offer advice based on your medical history. Cod Liver Oil is not recommended for children under 12 but I am certain we took it at much younger ages than that when we were little. The Boots Cod Liver Oil comes in small white tubs with a turquoise blue twist top lid. The tubs contain 30 x 340mg capsules and they cost just 99p per tub, or 3.33p per capsule, which is very good value and also very cheap when you consider the price of some well known brands you can buy. ********************************************************** I have found the Boots capsules to be reasonably good and would recommend them as they are easy to take and much cheaper than most Cod Liver Oil supplements. Whilst I am not a fan of the taste I can see that the capsules do offer great benefits, so I am rating Cod Liver Oil with 4 stars.
I started taking Cod Liver Oil capsules a few years back now, and although they do taste pretty digusting, I have found them to be a great supplement to what I eat in the day and have really helped with my joints and feeling great. Since I was quite young I've always had problems with my knee joints and these capsules have helped to a certain degree. They are essentially oil that is extracted from cods liver as the name suggests. Sounds disgusting! Well if you don't think about that fact and you just take them ignoring the taste then you will be fine. I try to take around 2 capsules a day and a container with 120 capsules included costs about £4.50 from almost all big supermarkets, so is pretty good value to be honest with you. I generally take cod liver oil for the health benefits they provide and also for healthy joints. I do feel that these capsules benefit me and help with my knee. I find it easier to walk and climb stairs and also out for the ocassional run. Overall, I would highly recommend this product to anyone who either has problems with their joints already or wishes to try to keep their joints heathier as they get older. The main drawback as mentioned is the taste to be honest with you but if you take the capsules rather than the liquid it's not too bad. Also, the capsules are slightly big to swallow but you can do it. However, all these things are outweighed by the benefits of this great product. So try it out today as you have nothing to lose really.
As someone who lifts weights and runs regularly, cod liver oil is something which was recommended to me a long time ago. Even for people who don't exercise, it may well be beneficial. The omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA are what makes cod liver oil special. Many scientific studies have shown there to be benefits from taking this supplement. The anecdotal evidence is also very persuasive. You could get all the omega-3 that you need from eating at least 1 portion of oily fish, such as mackerel and sardines, per week. It seems that in practice many people have problems doing this. If you don't regularly eat oily fish, it is highly likely you are deficient in omega-3. Research has shown this could be putting you at higher risk of hypertension, high triglycerides, low level of HDL (good) cholesterol. Omega-3 has also been shown to act like an anti-inflammatory, helping to keep joints flexible, reducing joint pain, easing the symptoms of arthritis. My own experience has been that cod liver oil can relieve knee pain, which I sometimes get from running, and doing leg squats. I can also lift heavier when taking it, my elbows feel like they can take the strain. I've certainly suffered during periods where I haven't taken this supplement. As for the cardiovascular benefits, well I can't really say that I have felt it has made a difference in that way. I've also noticed that cod liver makes my skin look healthier. I've taken it in liquid form and in capsule. I can say unequivocably, I prefer the capsules! The liquid has made me throw up on more than one occasion! The only way I have been able to take the liquid, is by squeezing my nostrils, to shut off my taste buds. Even after swallowing, I wouldn't stop squeezing for at least 1 minute, there is a terrible fishy aftertaste. To some extent you get this aftertaste with the capsules, but it's certainly more bearable. You must be careful only to stick to the manufacturer's instructions on the dose to take, because the vitamins in it, A and D can be toxic. It is certainly not the case of more being better. My overall assessment is that cod liver oil is beneficial for those who take regular exercise, essentially it keeps the joints in good condition. I've also noticed it is good for my skin. From personal experience, I can't comment on the validity of the other benefits which have been claimed, but there has been a lot of interesting research, and this will surely continue.
I started suffering from dry joints a few years ago, even though I am relatively young and only in my twenties. I didnt want to bother my GP with a trivial problem so I asked around and cod liver oil was one of three vitamins recommended to me to help with this ailment. It certainly took some shopping around to find the best price. I looked on lots of different websites and shops and the price varied so much, I hope it's a reflection of the quality and that prices aren't just random. I ended up buying it from my local health food store at a slightly enflated price, and have since moved to Boots, and havent noticed any difference. Cod liver oil comes in a soft capsule, that tastes of nothing strong, and has the texture of soft plastic (don't let that put you off though!). the capsule dissolves within you and leaves the oil inside the work its magic. The reason most people do not take the oil directly is beciase they cannot bear the taste. It is particularly strong and distinctive. It took a week of taking my new found vitamin regime before I noticed any difference, btu my joints soon started to soften, not feel so dry and creak less when I moved. If I stop my supplements the effects come back after only a few days. I would definitely recommend cod liver oil, Im a believer of trying to fix things in a most natural way before going to your doctor for drugs. This has worked for me, and I have had no side effects and in the whole scheme of things it is not too expensive, although I could do without having to buy it!!
COD LIVER OIL Cod Liver Oil is basically the oil extracted from the cods liver. You can buy this almost anywhere either supermarket or chemist. You can buy it in liquid for, which is pretty disgusting to taste. You can buy it in capsule form, which is much better, even though you may 'burp' up the taste later in the day. Uses for cod liver oil are mainly for joint care, and common sense will tell us that it will oil our body a little. I actually think of it as adding oil as you would a car to keep on going, to stop us ceasing up! Does it work? I believe it does, but unfortunately I can't prove it. I can however tell you a story of the time I took a tablespoon with orange juice. Nine months pregnant to the exact day, and feeling fed up and extremely heavy with the three stone of extra weight. After a moan to my mother, who suggested I try a tablespoon of cod liver oil with orange juice which may 'move things along', I popped out and bough a bottle of the foul liquid. I took the oil with orange juice, followed by an afternoon knap. I woke up a few hours later with a dull ache in the lower stomach. I instantly knew this was the start of labour, and low and behold (missing out the main story) I produced a baby girl 8lb 6 five hours late. Some may say, coincidence, but I am convinced this did in fact start me off. My mid wife gave me a thorough telling off, and said how dangerous this could have been, as the baby sometimes slips down too quickly and causes shock. Please don't try it if you are with child. I certainly wouldn't have had I know what may have happened. My husband and I take 1000mg each day (anything less wouldn't even be close to a tea spoon). We use it to prevent stiffness in the joints. I guess if you believe it works, you are halfway there. There are some great offers around. Tesco often do three for two and 1000mg bottles. Seven Seas are the most expensive. The average price is £7 for 60 tablets, but the price varies greatly from brand to brand. You can't really measure the quality, so I would go for the cheapest. You can buy fish oil capsules but this is from another part of the fish (not sure which part). I do know some people swear by cod liver oil, and I haven't heard it can do us any harm. I think, therefore it's worth a try. When I was 8, I hurt my knee at guilds. Some girl thought it would be funny to put her 14 stone of weight onto one of my legs causing it to bruise and inflame. It hurt so much. The when the accident reoccurred last year (obviously not due to the girl again) I remember my first time. My mother insisted that I took cod liver oil to help the joints repair better and to help the pain. At the time frame I was already taking enough medication so my mum wanted something more natural. It seems to do the trick. --What it treats-- There are several different reasons for you to take cod liver oil but the main thing it is recognised for is to treat people with rheumatoid arthritis. This is a specific type of arthritis causes inflamed joints. It is helpful for bones in general as well so a lot of people who have experienced sports injuries take it instead of more proscribed medication. It can also be used as a preventative as it helps to maintain strong bones. --The difference between Cod Liver and EPA Fish Oils-- EPA Fish Oil - This is taken from the body of the fish. Rich in Omega 3 and fatty acids. Is recognised to help many different things including mild depression, concentration and has even been used in experiments on the affects it has over cancer (even though no one would actual write this on the label). It has been advertised a lot recently for its ability to help concentration including on children. Children who took it for a month and had tests throughout that time frame showed significant improvements in their concentration in class. There is an ongoing argument on the affects it has on children with ADHD. Some say that it helps the child to calm down more where as others say it makes them more hyper and worse than when they started. Cod Liver Oil - This (of course) is taken from the liver of the cod. Also rich in Omega 3 and fatty acids. Know to have vitamin A and D in it. Vitamin A helps many different things including to fight infection, maintains good eyesight and it promotes the growth and repairs of body tissue. Vitamin D is normally collected by the body thanks to the sun and so in the winter you can miss out on this (and if you live in the UK you can miss out of it most of the year). It is really important for the development of your teeth including keeping them strong, it can prevent/protect muscles from becoming weak and it's good for your overall well being. --When you would/wouldn't take it and why-- The main time frame I would advise against taking cod liver oil is the summer, or any time there is lready sun. As it is rich in vitamin D if you take it in the winter you are topping yourself up with a necessary vitamin your body cant so easily access. If you take it whilst the sun is out, your body may be getting an unnecessary overdose of the vitamin. Don't take it if you have been advised to take omega 3, take a separate supplement with just omega 3 (and maybe 6 and 9 in it). --The tablet itself - Contents, sizes etc-- The most commonly purchased CLO within Holland and Barrett is High strength 1000mg as it is constantly on promotion, Therefore this is the one I am going to take the contents from. (RDA - Recommended Daily Allowance) Cod Liver Oil - 1000mg within this is: Vitamin A 800 ug (RDA 100%) Vitamin D 5ug (RDA 100%) Eicosapentaenoic Acid 110mg Docosahexaenoic acid 100mg You only need to take one capsule a day, preferably with a meal. There are two different ways to take cod liver oil. Either as a liquid or a capsule. For quicker results take the liquid form as it gets into the system quicker. For a better taste, take the capsules. There isn't much difference to be honest. It's all to do with your preference. Don't worry if you are a vegetarian, there are capsules for you too. They are clearly labelled differently so there is no confusion. The down side being that they never seem to be on promotion on only come in small sizes (100 capsules is the max I have seen). Capsule sizes:410mg and 1000mg Liquid Sizes:250mg and 500mg --My experience of it-- I took cod liver oil for seven months. I took the high strength capsule every morning with my breakfast. Immediately I noticed no change. We expected this though as the place we had bought it from stated it's not a miracle cure. I did how ever notice my knee getting significantly better after a month. I had a bad knee for 6 months before turning to this capsule and despite all the medicine given to me by the doctor, this worked the best. Within three months I was able to feel like I could take up running cross country again (not that I actually did. No need to take the risk after all). When my injury reoccurred I went straight to my local food shop and got a fresh batch. I actually noted down everything this time though. Week 1 - Ew, one of the capsules broke in my mouth yesterday I think I may be sick. On a serious note though, no more inflammation but it doesn't feel any better. Week 2 - I am able to stand on my knee now will next to no pain. The last time I did this with the aid of doctors' medication, it took several months with next to no result. Week 3 - I can easily stand on my knee and apply pressure to it now. Walking is almost effortless again Week 4 - Huge improvement from a month ago. Aware to take it easy with my knee but can do a days work without eating painkillers like smarties. Fandabitastic --(Possible) side effects-- Cod Liver Oil is actually pretty good for you all over. The main thing is that if you are pregnancy or breast feeding you must check with your doctor before. Some for if you are taking any medication. If you think you have a good diet already then something else to help may be in order. There is no need to have Vitamins A, D and Omega 3 if you are already eating it within your food. So ask yourself what your diet is, what supplements you are already taking and why you want it. Then think if it is the best thing for you. --Prices-- Well now, that all depends on when you go into your local store and what promotion they have. At time of print, you could purchase 240 high strength 1000mg capsules for £4.99 OR 500 high strength 1000mg capsules for £10.39. And I believe as on 05/04/07 there will be a 3 for 2 offer on all products in store. It honestly depends on when you go. The best thing to do is find out your local stores number and ask then what the current best offer is. --Cod Liver Oil and -- You can purchase CLO either on its own or with other products in it. This can be very useful (and cost effective) if you have two capsules in one. You can get CLO with: Evening Primrose Oil - RRP £4.79 - This can be used to promote good skin, hair and nails. It is also used by females to help level hormones and calm their 'monthly's' Glucosamine - RRP £5.99 - This is used to reduce inflammation and repairs the tissue between the joints. So if you have a bad injury, so you dislocated something. This would help the bone and the joint tissue Odourless Garlic - RRP £4.69 - Good for many different things but used for your digestive system a lot. And with it being odourless there is no worry about smelly breath. Multivitamins - RRP £4.99 - Instead of taking CLO and a multivitamin you can take it all in one. Calcium - RRP £6.49 - Good for your bones and teeth. So works well with the CLO. (Remember that even though I'm going by the RRP, it's the smallest one and getting them during promotions is a lot cheaper) --Alternatives-- Omega 3 - Can take a separate supplement or having a good amount of fish in your weekly diet (like ..Cod Liver Oil!) Vitamin A - A specialised supplement. In food like: Egg yolks, milk, dried apricots, carrots (BUNNNNNNNYYYY), spinach and liver. Vitamin D - A specialised supplement. The sun - any excuse to get a tan! Salmon, Tuna, milk, margarine, eggs, beef and Swiss cheese. Inflammation - For this there are several different things that you could try. They include Glucosamine, Devils claw or Cats claw. Ask the Holland and Barrett product advisors for details on what will suit you best. Would I recommend it? Now this is a tricky one. The simple answer yes. The difficult is no. For me this was the perfect product and for people with a similar problem I would definitely say "BUY NOW, BUYYYYYYYYY YOU MONKEY" and even though you would think I was crazy you would get the idea. HOWEVER, if you take medication, have anyone of the problems mentions above, have something similar the list goes on. Then I would rather not recommend it to you. Some of you may be old enough to remember the time when children were given a daily spoonful of cod liver oil, often against their will, as a vitamin supplement. Anybody who has had the misfortune of actually tasting liquid cod liver oil will understand the protests that children often made! Fortunately, we are of the generation when science has given us odourless, tasteless capsules that make getting our oils an altogether more palatable job than it was when my mother was a child. But why should we bother taking them at all? Most people are aware that there are both good and bad fats: artificially produced trans fatty acids and saturated fats are bad in any amount. The best fats are those that contain essential fatty acids (EFAs), so called because without them we would die. Western diets are seriously lacking in the EFA Omega 3, which is essential to good health and is found in fish, fish oil and very little else; it has been estimated that 85% of people in the Western world are deficient in Omega 3. At the same time, we consume far too much of the EFA Omega 6 (found in sunflower oil, corn oil and other oils). The ideal ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 should be 1:1 (in other words, eating the same amount of both), but it has been found that we consume a 20:1 to a 50:1 ratio! Although we do need both Omega 3s and Omega 6s it is becoming increasingly clear that an excess of Omega 6 fatty acids can have dire consequences. Many scientists believe that a major reason for the high incidence of heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, premature aging, and some forms of cancer is the profound imbalance between our intake of Omega 6 and Omega 3 fatty acids. Therefore, it is a good idea to boost our intake of Omega 3 to get this balance back, and taking fish oils is an easy way to do this. Fish oil is also associated with a number of positive health benefits such as preventing heart disease, depression, arthritis, hyperactivity in children, boosting energy levels, improving concentration, and increasing resistance to colds and flu. It is probably best known as being a joint lubricant, however, and such claims have recently been proven by a study at Cardiff University, where arthritis patients showed dramatic improvements in their joints after 12 weeks of taking fish oil capsules. There are also claims linking taking fish oils with reduced incidences of cancer, diabetes and Alzheimers, although as I understand it these have not yet been proven. Hang on a minute; this category is for cod liver oil. What is the difference between that and fish oil? Cod liver oil and fish oil are similar, related products close enough related to discuss them together in one review but are slightly different. Cod liver oil is extracted (unsurprisingly) from the liver of cod and is rich in vitamins A and D. Fish oil, on the other hand, is taken from the flesh of fatty fish such as salmon and herring and contains very little of these vitamins. Both contain the specific fatty acids EPA and DHA that are the source of the health benefits listed above. In choosing between cod liver and fish oils, you are simply deciding whether or not you need the extra vitamins A and D. Over time, I have taken both types of oils depending on the product I chose and whether I feel I need the vitamins at that particular time. The reason I take fish oils is for a combination of the general health benefits listed above and more specifically for the association with healthy joints. As I mentioned in my recent review on glucosamine (another joint supplement), I have problems with some of my joints and I feel that the oils offer me benefits when taken in conjunction with glucosamine, especially in preventing aches and pains. I have been taking one form or other of the oils for several years now, partly through the personal recommendation of other family members who have similar problems, and partly through the advice of my doctor, who feels that they may offer me benefits and certainly wont do me any harm (provided I dont overdose on them, that is!). I personally find no great difference between cod liver and fish oils, and I tend to take whichever product is on special offer when I go shopping providing it is a good quality one, of course rather than sticking to a particular brand. Overall though, I often go for cod liver oil over winter when it is harder to get vitamin D (as there is less sunshine) and fish oils for the rest of the year. Although I have been something of a brand whore, I am still careful when choosing my cod liver/fish oil supplement as poor quality ones will only give you none of the benefits, it will also mean that you are throwing away your money. My advice when selecting your oils is: · Go for a brand name you recognise and trust rather than the obscure ones advertised for bulk buys in newspapers and magazines, as you really dont know what you are getting. I often go for the Boots own brand as a reliable source that is also often on 3 for 2 offers, making it good value for money (standard price is £3.35 for 60 capsules). Seven Seas (£8.99 for 120 capsules) and Holland & Barrett (between £2 and £4 per 60 capsules depending on potency) are also reliable names. These capsules are also generally not too big, which makes them easier to swallow. · Think carefully about whether you need the vitamins A and D from cod liver oil. If you get plenty of these in your diet anyway, it is a good idea to opt for fish oils, as these vitamins are fat soluble and you body cannot rid itself of excesses very easily. Too much of these vitamins can be as harmful as too little. Also, avoid cod liver oils when pregnant, as high levels of vitamin A could be harmful to the baby. · Always check how many capsules of a specific product you are supposed to take per day. With some brands, it looks like you getting a lot of capsules for your money, but the fine print shows you need to take 3 or 4 a day, which makes it far less good value in the long run. · If you have difficulty in swallowing capsules, then you can get liquid cod liver oils. Should the rather unpleasant natural flavour not appeal to you, then Seven Seas do an orange flavour liquid for £1.86 (300ml), which is available at Boots. However, if you be looking for different benefits from your fish oils, then a relatively new player in the market may appeal to you more than the traditional product. Over the past few months I have noticed an improvement in my joints, largely from taking the glucosamine supplements I mentioned previously. As I struggle with my PhD thesis, I have also felt that an increased ability to concentrate for sustained periods would be beneficial to me. This is why I have recently changed allegiance from whatever is on the best price to a particular brand: Equazens Eye Q capsules. Eye Q is a fish oil supplement that has been specifically formulated to have different concentrations of the essential fatty acids EPA and DHA to those normally found in standard fish oils; more specifically it has a far higher proportion of EPA to DHA and an added vitamin E supplement. This combination has been shown by research to be more beneficial to coordination, learning ability, memory and concentration although less good for the joint related benefits. I personally have noticed a difference in taking this supplement after a just a couple of weeks, my concentration was noticeably improved and my mind felt clearer and more able to focus on my work - although it doesnt come cheap at £7.99 for 60 capsules (which will last between 10 days and a month, depending on the dose taken; there are specific guidelines on how many capsules you should take to take to get maximum benefit in the pack). Overall, I find it hard not to recommend fish oils and cod liver oils. They are a simple method to a range of proven health benefits, and the basic products are inexpensive and easily available. There are only two real drawbacks I have found. Firstly, that some of the cheaper products arent as odourless as they claim, so you end up with horrible fishy breath (yuck!) and secondly, that few manufactures put the capsule size on the packet. Eye Q and Boots both do, but in other cases I have found myself with capsules that are so big that they are uncomfortable to swallow. Highly recommended!
