I started a diet a few weeks ago which involves me doing a kind of fast two days a week and on those two days I need to stick to as close to 500 calories as possible for the whole day. I prefer to be able to have a proper meal with my son in the evening than split the 500 calories across three meals and so I don't usually have anything to eat until tea time in the evenings on fast days. On those days it can be a bit of a struggle and when I first started I had some awful headaches on fast days and so looking on a 5:2 diet page on facebook I saw many others had similar issues and many people put it down to losing essential electrolytes through the day and recommended Emergen-C sachets so I bought some from amazon.
Emergen-C sachets are described as a dietary supplement and the box that I bought contains 30 sachets of the product. The sachets come packed in a thin cardboard box which was quite squished in the post to be honest. It isn't the strongest of boxes but what is nice is it isn't a massive box and so it is easy to store. I keep mine on top of the microwave so they are always available when I need them. On the box we are told that the Emergen-C sachets contain 1000mg of vitamin C as well as 24 nutrients, 7 B Vitamins, electrolytes and antioxidants. We are advised that this product is naturally good for you and that it will help rejuvenate you and leave you feeling good.
As i mentioned there are thirty sachets in the box. You can obviously take one of these a day but I tend to just take them on the two days a week I am doing a fast day or will occasionally have one when I am just feeling a bit run down as well. The sachets come in many different flavours but the one that I chose were the raspberry flavour ones as I thought that they would be quite tasty. Reviews on amazon said that it was a gorgeous taste so I was hopeful! To make one of these drinks you simply pour yourself a glass of water and then add the contents of the sachet to it. You can actually choose how much water you use in terms of your own taste which is really handy I think. When you add the sachet the water turns a bright pink colour and fizz comes up to the top of the glass. You do need to give it a good stir because it can settle on the top of the drink and it doesn't look appetising at all like this!
So, the taste test....is it as good as people on amazon said? Well, in a word, no! It isn't horrible but it isn't a drink that I enjoy either. I personally find that if I sip it it tastes worst so I try and drink it as quickly as possible on a fast day! I will usually have the drink around lunch time as it seems to be around then that headaches seem to develop for me on fast days. Since I have started drinking these drinks my headaches haven't come along on a fast day and I guess some of it could be down to getting used to doing fast days but on the same hand it could also be down to these sachets as well. I feel as though I have a bit more energy on a fast day when I have had one of these vitamin filled drinks.
For me the main thing in these sachets was the fact they included electrolytes. On a fast day I have to drink a lot of water to keep my tummy feeling full but obviously this means I need to go to the toilet more often! As such I end up losing salts and things from my body which are essential for functioning properly and this is where this drink comes in. I think they would also be great for when you are feeling a bit run down and just in need of a pick me up because they do contain vitamins.
I do think these are quite a good product. They allow me to up my intake of vitamins and as they contain seven B vitamins which enhance energy naturally without any caffeine it means that there is no crash when the caffeine comes out of your system! The vitamin C helps to support your immune system too. A pack of 30 sachets costs £9.05 on amazon at the moment which isn't cheap I know. As I tend to stick to using them on fast days it means the thirty would last me around fifteen fast weeks and so it isn't too bad when I look at it like that. I wouldn't like to have to pay it every month to take one every day though.
Thank you for reading my review!
In the last few months I have had what seems like a constant cold. As a result I have been feeling really tired and lacking in energy. A friend recommended I try a vitamin supplement to see if it helped as she firmly believed the product had helped her. I took a walk to my local health food store and discovered a vast array of vitamins on sale. However the one that was recommended to me was a vitamin supplement from Emergen. There were several flavours on offer and I opted for the acai berry flavour.
The box contains 24 sachets and cost me £15.99. This is far more than I would normally consider paying for a vitamin supplement, but I was tired of feeling under the weather! The sachets are designed to be added to water and taken as a drink. The recommended dose is that you take 1 sachet 2 to 4 times a day. I decided to try 2 drinks a day;1 in the morning and 1 in the evening.
On reading the information provided I see that each sachet provides just 25 calories although I was not impressed to see it also gives you 6 grams of sugar. Each sachet provides all the vitamin C you need for a day plus riboflavin, niacin.Vitamin B6 AND B12, folic acid plus electrolytes and minerals. In total one little sachet provides you with 7 B vitamins, Vitamin C and 24 nutrients. This all sounds really good to me! The drink is reported to help boost the immune system and speed up metabolic function giving an energy boost.
The drink is easy to make;simply add 1 sachet to a glass and add about 160ml of water. The drink is fizzy and a lovely dark shade of purple. I really wanted this drink to work and had high hopes! However it tastes absolutely awful! It is really sweet and has a strange artificial flavour that I cant describe. I can't stomach fizzy, dissoluble pain killers and this drink has the same effect on me. It actually makes me feel physically sick!
However having paid out my hard earned cash I decided to persevere in the hope I would at least start to feel more like myself. After a week I did start to feel a bit better and certainly had more energy. I stopped taking the drink and still continued to feel better. I am not convinced the drink did much for my health and I may have got better without enduring the revolting taste!
Overall I would not buy this supplement again as I feel I normally get all I need from my diet. However if you fancy trying it is is available from several internet sites.
