Advantages: Afforable, works
Disadvantages: The taste!
I was diagnosed with anemia around six years ago now and have been taking iron tablets daily ever since. Although I don't particullary have any problems swallowing the tablets, when I saw a liquid equivellent it really appealed to me as it seemed like a slightly nicer way of getting the extra iron that I need. I bought a 28 day supply of the sachets from Boots and paid £8.25, which I personally think is a reasonable price. A 14 day supply is also available for £5.39, but if like me you need to take an iron supplement daily then the larger pack is more practical as well as better value
The liquid iron supplement comes packaged in sachets which are white and orange. Each sachet contains 5mg of iron, which it states on the back of the sachet is the equivellent of 2lbs of spinach. The sachets are easy to open and you simply need to tear the corner open. The sachets come inside a cardboard box which also has a white and orange colour scheme. The front of the box has the branding and product name and it states that the product is a gentle everyday iron supplement which is 100% natural iron-rich water which is straight from the source. It also states that it is ideal for everyone including children over the age of two and pregnant women - I found it handy that it's so clear who the supplement is suitable for.
The back of the box has nutritional information, ingredients and company contact details. The importance of iron is also explained and there is also a brief product description which says - this iron is naturally in water, so it's easily and gently absorbed by your body. It should not cause certain side effects (stomach irritation and constipation) associated with iron intake. The box is re-sealable and you don't need to rip the box to get it open which I like and I keep the box on my kitchen work surface to keep all the sachets together and to remind me to take one each morning; due to the white and orange colour scheme it's really eye catching so I never forget.
Inside the box there's the sachets, along with a very informative leaflet. The first page is entitled 'welcome to spatone' - this gives a run down of what the sachets contain and why iron is important. The second page is 'taking spatone' - this states that one sachet should be taken a day, however if you know that your iron stores are low you can take two. A full sachet is suitable for small children over the age of two and it is best to take the supplement on an empty stomach. It states that you can expect a very metallic taste, and it is reccomended to mix the supplement into half a glass of water or fruit juice and drink immedietly.
If you decide to mix this with fruit juice, don't choose grape juice as it apparently reduces your bodies ability to absorb iron. It is also best not to take this with milk or carbonated drinks. I didn't read the leaflet the first time that I tried one of these and I added it into a banana milkshake and added lots of honey to mask the taste of iron, which worked, however I now mix mine into a glass of orange juice. Lots more information can be found in the leaflet including facts and background info on the company.
The sachets are easy to open - they're made of thin plastic and have a foil lining. The liquid inside looks just like water and it has a subtle metallic scent to it. I have one sachet in the morning before breakfast and one half an hour after my evening meal. I tried taking it with just water as I felt that it was a waste of fruit juice as the drink has to be downed in one and it is not a drink that you can sip and enjoy! Unfortunetly when I did try and take it with just water I was almost sick as the metallic taste is so overpowering, and I now take it with a glass of orange juice. The metallic taste is still very noticeable but after almost 2 months of taking the supplement I am used to the taste and although it is not particullary pleasant, it's not vile either!
I began taking these almost two months ago now and although I haven't seen much difference seeing as I took iron supplements in tablet form before I started taking these, I haven't seen a decline in health and my energy levels and general feeling of well being are at a steady level. The supplement definitely helps keep me feeling much more 'with it' rather than lightheaded and tired like I did before I started taking iron and it is just as effective as iron in tablet form. It's affordable and effective, so I overall reccommend this product.
Summary: 5/5 - reccommended
