Boots offer a wide range of vitamins and health supplements and their own Boots brand is often a little cheaper than the branded items you can buy. I feel that these cheaper Boots products still work just as well and can save you money in some cases too. When I set out to look into buying some Ginseng recently I noticed the Boots Korean Ginseng product and decided to give it a try.
Boots Korean Ginseng is vitality promoting a product that forms part of the Boots healthcare range. When I bought mine I mixed my purchase with some other items and was able to benefit from a reduced price as the items I bought were on a 3 4 2 deal. The usual price for the Boots Korean Ginseng is £4.85 for a 75g box, which even without a discount is a fair price for good quality Ginseng.
The Boots Korean Ginseng that I bought comes in a different pack to the one shown here. My pack is a white cardboard box with a picture of a bright blue Ginseng leaf on the front and a blue band in the same colour along the bottom. Each pack has 30 tablets in it, so will last yo a whole month as you can only take one tablet per day.
You should not take Ginseng if you suffer from epilepsy, or diabetes and its not suitable for use during pregnancy either. If you are uncertain as to whether you should take Ginseng then check with your GP and also discuss your requirements with the chemist before purchasing. Its always better to ere on the side of caution too if you are taking other medication so you should check if this is suitable to be taken in conjunction with your usual medicines and alternative therapies.
The idea of taking Ginseng is that it gives you a bit of a boost when you are feeling low, can lift your spirits and give you more energy and vitality. It is also claimed to be an aphrodisiac which might be a side effect that is a bonus to some! Recent studies have found that Ginseng has anti inflammatory side effects on the body, so would perhaps be of use to those with joint stiffness associated with arthritis etc.
I have only recently started taking these particular tablets, but have taken Ginseng in the past and felt some benefit. I have noticed that I feel a little more refreshed in the mornings after I take a tablet, but as yet its early days and so results are mixed.
I am going to persevere with them, as when I took them before I really noticed that they gave me a boost. So I feel that I will need to take them for a few more weeks to really notice the full benefits of the Ginseng.
One of the main reasons I am taking the Boots Korean Ginseng for is to help boost my immune system as I recently had a summer cold and have also been suffering from hay fever, which I have never had till this year. Its really been getting me down so I am hoping this may have some effect as I don't want to keep taking antihistamine all the time. Only time will tell as to whether I feel any extra benefit in this area, but I feel its worth trying.
One thing I will say is that in the past when I have taken Ginseng I have noticed that it can make you feel a bit fidgety and restless at night before bed. I used to take my Ginseng mid day, but now always take them early in the morning, so that any similar side effects are minimized.
I am also using the Boots pillow mist spray and a Bachs sleep remedy, as the hot weather we have been having has made for restless nights. I cannot attribute this to the Ginseng at the moment though.
In summary I feel that the product can offer something to me and so I am going to continue with it for now. So far due to mixed results, I feel they are a 3 star product.
Korean Ginseng, which is made from the roots of one the 'Panax' genus of plants, has been used for centuries as a supplement. Reportedly the Ginsenosides (not to be confused with genocide) which is the active element of Ginseng can promote, fix and boost a whole host of things. It is considered to be an almost "fix-all" herbal solution.
Some of the claims include its reputed effect to:
Boost Energy Levels
Boost Immune System
Boost the libido (sex drive)
You can expect to pay anything upto and over £10 for 30 tablets, thankfully these Boots ones cost around the £5 mark. The price you pay apparantly is dependant on the % of the active element of Ginseng present in the tablets, an thus the quality. However even these comparitvely low-cost ones are still not cheap things if they do not actually work.
I will admit to being a sceptic. Just because something has been used for 1,000's of years, it doesn't mean its any good. I mean the Chinese use Tiger's penis, or Rhino horn in some of their ancient herbal medicines. Would anyone advocate that these days? I think not.
So anyway, long story short a combination of working too hard, doing lots of building/decorating work at home, the stress of a demanding other half (very stressful lol) and all in all, I was pretty worn out. There were many days where I felt tired even just after waking up (thats a bad sign).
Someone at work then recommended giving these Boots Korean Ginseng tables a try. Reluctantly I paid the money (a rip-off?) and gave them a go.
As sceptical as I am, there is certainly something to these tablets! There is definately more than a "placebo" effect with these. An I do not say that very lightly.
Within the first day of taking these I felt a large surge in energy, and I experienced a euphoric feeling which felt a bit odd, a bit like being drunk to the point of merry (not legless though).
The second day or so, I noticed a big surge in libido. Which wasn't very welcome, as I was glad of the break really. Lets face it, its tiring. lol. In addition I felt much more better able to concentrate and focus.
After about a week or so of continous use, the effects were not very noticeable anymore, or I imagine I had become accustomed to them. For one reason or another (being in a rush in the morning etc) and feeling that I didn't need them anymore. I stopped taking them.
The after effect of stopping taking them, was neglible. Meaning there was no noticeable return to feeling lethargic. So to this day, the rest of the box sits in my cupboard unused. However, if I ever feel run down again in the future I will know where to go!
I was first alerted to Ginseng many many years ago. Ginseng is a Chinese herb and one of the the most used in traditional medicine.
The claims for the benefits of ginseng are many and include reducing the effects of stress, improving performance, boosting energy levels, enhancing memory and stimulating the immune system.
It is widely used in Oriental medicine and claims have been made that it can cure pulmonary complaints, dissolve tumors and reduce the aging process. How true these claims are I am not in a position to say.
However, Ginseng does contain vitamins A, B6 and zinc. The main active ingredients of ginseng are ginsenosides. These are steroid-like ingredients that enable ginseng to balance and counter the effects of stress.
In China studies have revealed ginsenosides help to increase protein synthesis and the activity of neurotransmitters in the brain. In this way ginseng can also help to restore memory and enhance concentration and cognitive abilities.
Side effects of ginseng can include the inability to sleep, nausea, diarrhea, euphoria, headaches, epistaxis, high blood pressure, low blood pressure, mastalgia, and vaginal bleeding.
Boots Korean Ginseng contains 30 tablets and is suitable for adults and children over 12 years. The dosage is one tablet to be taken daily. It is recommended however that you do not take continually for more than 3 months. They have no colours, flavours and preservatives. You will need to seek medical advice before using it if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or suffer from allergies. You will also need to consult a doctor or pharmacist if you suffer from any medical condition such as diabetes, epilepsy or if you are taking any other medication.
Obviously, I can only speak from my personal experience of using this product. I have taken ginseng when under lots of pressure and in stressful times. The effect it had on me was very noticeable. You know what it is like when you are stressed and have lots of things to do/ think about etc...well ginseng helped me to 'clear my mind of clutter' and to really focus on the most important thing - one at a time ...... in fact it made me very 'chilled' out. (I did not suffer any noticeable side effects...apart from a feeling of euphoria which was quite nice!)
It may just be the placebo effect ...however, whenever i feel I need a boost or things are getting on top of me...I turn to the ginseng!
