Boots Pharmaceuticals Iron
Disadvantages: Don't think they worked for me
This is a review of the Iron Tablets I bought from Boots a few months back. I was feeling a bit washed out and tired and as a non meat eater I am aware my iron levels can dip a bit and they are hard to replenish so I thought I'd try and help myself a little. In my 2010 pregnancy I was prescribed Iron supplements so thought I'd take matters into my own hands.
At Boots I could only find the multi vitamins with iron on the shelves which wasn't what I wanted so I asked for advice and was immediately asked if I had a prescription to which I answered no but that I wanted to take the supplement. I reflected later on the shop assistant's reaction which indicated that the strength they sell 'off the shelf' is a very small dose (eg. 14mg) and may not make much difference.
The Iron tablets are small round red pills, easy to swallow. I began taking the tablet immediately to see if it worked and I can honestly say I felt no difference in my energy levels whatsoever. I continued with the tablets, all 60 of them to give myself a chance to react. The dose is one a day so you have roughly two month's supply there.
The bottle advises this product is suitable for those over 12 and Boots Pharmaceuticals Iron 14mg helps maintain normal iron levels in the blood.
I paid £3.09 for the bottle of tablets which I got a few Boots points on, but to be honest I think it was money wasted really.
I am not someone who believes in taking lots of tablets for the sake of it but I felt so washed out and tired I wanted to try the Iron supplements to see if they made a difference. And they didn't! I wouldn't particularly recommend these supplements as I don't think they represent good value for money.
I would not buy these again. I don't think the dose is high enough to make a difference. It is probably the same as a multi vitamin containing iron so if you wanted to give your body a dose of vits that may be a better route to go down. I have since had some blood tests now and am waiting for the results which I have no doubt will result in me having to have the prescription-strength dose of Iron.
Summary: I won't be buying again
