Clif Shot Electrolyte Replacement Drink ------------------------------------------------ Last summer when I was over in the US visiting my son who lives in Arizona I was intrigued to see a product on his kitchen counter which was very new to me. The product called Clif Shot was in a large round tub, and on further discussion with him I discovered that this was an electrolyte replacement powder. My son moved to The States four years ago when he married an American girl, and they have been living in Arizona for several years now on the edge of the desert. He told me that many people in the state drink this product, especially if they are planning to be outside for any length of time; the temperatures in the summer are mostly 40c and dehydration is a real problem for many on a daily basis. The product is mainly designed to be used by athletes before, during and after exercise, but this use for extreme heat is as important especially in the Southern US. I also think that with more and more of us taking holidays in climates which have high heat and humidity, it is well worth considering. It packs with ease in the luggage and is then available to add to drinks as required. I enjoyed this drink on many occasions whilst over there and I believe it contributed to my well being. I battle a medical condition daily which has caused me to have low blood volume and to suffer with many symptoms as a consequence of this. Keeping hydrated is vital, and this product was absolutely brilliant as it prevented headaches and contributed to my overall wellness during that visit. My Search To Find It In The UK! -------------------------------------------- On my return home I began in earnest to seek out the product, as I thought it would be perfect for summer holidays and for hot weather days. To my delight I found that Amazon was selling it. It is currently available in two flavours -Cranberry Razz and Lemonade, and a large 910g tub will cost £14.99 with free delivery if you opt for the supersaver option. So Who Can Benefit? ---------------------------- For the athlete the product has special attributes in that it supplies energy to the muscles if taken before and after exercise. It also replenishes minerals such as potassium and sodium which are lost during a workout. It is these same minerals, especially sodium, which are lost in high temperatures, so in places where the day temperature soars this drink is absolutely ideal. It is possible to make up the solution in bottles and take it on cycle rides and on running expeditions or just for sightseeing days on holiday. My Latest Trip ----------------- I took this drink away with me on my recent holiday to the Maldives. Here the temperatures are less high -around 30c, but there is much higher humidity, and for me this presents as great a challenge as do the desert Arizona temperatures. The powder comes with a scoop and all you do is to add it to water at the prescribed quantity. The drink it makes is really enjoyable and both flavours are refreshing and thirst quenching. I took the lemonade on this occasion and my husband shared the tub, so for a two week holiday we had 2-3 drinks each day of Clif Shot using the entire tub. I made sure we had one immediately on rising as this is when the dehydration is greatest. Many people were unwell at times on the holiday due to the heat, but I feel we escaped this to a large extent because we had adequate hydration. This is true especially in the early part of the holiday when the long haul flight would have caused a temporary dehydration. It is interesting to note that this saw most cases of illness in people on the holiday as they were hit by the heat after 12 hours of travelling. We did also have several glasses before we left home to make sure we were adequately hydrated before the flight. Other Uses -------------- My son recently suffered a viral case of sickness and following his illness used the drink to replenish fluids. He was really impressed by how he felt afterwards, and it made a positive impact on his recovery replacing lost fluids and electrolytes in the same way as Dioralyte does from the chemist. The Drink Contains: ----------------------- Organic Brown Rice Syrup Solids, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Citric Acid, Salt, Natural Flavour, Dipotassium Phosphate, Coloured with Beet Powder, Dicalcium Phosphate, Magnesium Oxide, Green Tea Extract (Decaffeinated). A recommended serving size is 20g and this yields 80 calories. Within these calories are 200mg of sodium, 50mg potassium and 10g sugars. There are no artificial colours or preservatives in the drink and it is made from 91% organic ingredients. It is also suitable for vegans but not for those with coelic disease. The inclusion of potassium is important especially if you are using it for running. My daughter had a brief but rather frightening spell in hospital two years ago with low potassium caused by inadequate replacement following a long distance run. Left untreated this can cause heart failure so for sports use drinks like these are very important. How Does It Taste? ------------------------ I find it to be delicious. Lemonade is probably my preferred drink as it is slightly tart but with a sweet undertone. It is a still drink rather like home made lemonade. The cranberry is also enjoyable, and this is slightly less acidic in its taste but both are equally refreshing. The latter makes a lovely pink drink which has a cocktail look to it! Check Out The Website. ------------------------------ There is an excellent website devoted to all the products made by Clif including their famous bars and this can be found at www.clifbar.com. By clicking on the product link on the bottom left you will see the Clif Shot Electrolyte Drink listed, and by clicking on it you are taken to a comprehensive section which covers everything about the drink and its uses. Final Thoughts ------------------ I am so grateful to my son for introducing this drink to me, which I will continue to purchase as it has been so beneficial to my well being especially in hot climates. I would also recommend it to anyone who engages in sporting activities and also to have in the cupboard for post illness rehydration. I have also found it to be of immense value if I have a glass just at the onset of a headache, and it has, on occasions, prevented a worsening of symptoms and progression to migraine. Well worth looking at for a multitude of reasons. If you are interested in this area of health then I can also recommend Vita Coco (coconut water) and Nuun tablets which I also use to combat dehydration in hot environments.
