I am a mother of four young special needs children. To put it bluntly, neither I nor my children are able to sleep very well at all. Some of my children have spectrum disorders and night terrors, and I simply have insomnia. I also work at a restaraunt, where I do not have a set schedule and have to be up way early in the mornings at times. I have tried Ambien for sleep, which makes me very groggy and tired in the morning. Where I work, I have to be alert. I was told about Melatonin by one of my son's therapists. I was very nervous to give him Melatonin because he was so young, but she explained to me that melatonin is a natural chemical that our body produces to make us sleep. We talked about maybe giving him half during the day to calm him down, but that would not work. Melatonin only works when it is dark, because that is when our body chemistry tells us to go to bed. The Melatonin never used to make me tired, but it seems to work now. I wake up feeling refreshed on those days I have to wake up at 3:45AM and jump to get ready for work. My children wake up early in the morning after they have theirs for the night. I take a spoon of Nutella, stick the pill in there, feel it to them, and soon, they are sleeping peacefully. My children actually look forward to bedtime when they get Melatonin because they know they will sleep well! Be advised, it is good to take for a couple of days and then take a break, unless your doctor tells you different.
