“ Brand: Holland and Barrett / Dosage: Capsules / Dosage Form: Bars „
- Why I Bought -
After being ill with Norovirus and food poisoning a few months ago I started taking a probiotic supplement to help keep my digestive tract healthy and hopefully prevent any such illnesses in the future. I also drink aloe vera juice daily to keep digestion running smoothly. I have been very pleased with both of these products purchased from Holland and Barrett and as a result I have been spending a little too much time 'hanging out' in the digestive health section of my local branch. I was browsing the many products on offer when I came across something called Intestinal Health IB which helps support intestinal balance (hence the IB, not irritable bowel as I first thought!) and a healthy gastrointestinal tract and colon. I don't suffer generally with digestion issues but having been ill three times in one month I have now decided that prevention is better than cure! I was also intrigued by the list of ingredients.
- Packaging -
Intestinal Health IB is presented in a white and purple box. The name of the product is clearly displayed in purple and green and the front of the box also displays the Holland and Barrett brand, the purpose for taking the capsules and a faint drawing of intestines. The back of the box lists the ingredients as well as the dose which is to take three capsules daily, preferably with a meal. There is a warning not to exceed the stated dose, consult your doctor if pregnant, breast feeding or on any medication, and they are not for persons under the age of 18. The capsules are suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Inside the box and four blister pack sheets containing 60 capsules in total. The capsules are easy to remove from the blister pack.
- Ingredients -
Intestinal Health IB contains a long list of ingredients, each with benefits for intestinal balance and gastrointestinal and colon health:
Riboflavin (B2) is very important for metabolism of fat, protein and carbohydrate, helping to produce energy. Deficiency of this vitamin can cause problems for digestion.
Pantothenic Acid (B5) works with Biotin and other B vitamins to ensure that food is properly digested and they are effectively metabolised to release energy. It is also important to help maintain the health of the digestive tract.
Folic Acid, like the vitamins above, is important for metabolising fats, proteins and carbohydrates. A symptom of deficiency is diarrhoea.
Biotin is essential for metabolism of fats, carbohydrates, protein and amino acids. People with conditions such as Crohn's disease are more likely to be deficient as they don't absorb this nutrient so easily from food.
FOS (Fructooligosaccharides) improves gastrointestinal health by preventing yeast infections and promoting the growth of friendly bacteria in the gut.
Inositol promotes digestive health and aids in metabolism of fats. Deficiency can cause constipation.
L-Glutamine is an amino acid that helps protect the mucosa lining of the digestive tract. Deficiency has been linked to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), colitis and Crohn's disease.
L-Lysine is an amino acid that helps break down food so that it is easily digested by the small intestine and nutrients are absorbed through the intestine wall.
L-Methionine improves digestion by ensuring that fats are adequately broken down so that they won't cause problems as they progress along the digestive tract.
RNA is needed for digestion of protein.
I think it is very clever that a lot of these ingredients need each other to work effectively. This means taking this particular combination is far superior than taking a couple of these ingredients separately. Each of these ingredients also have a host of other health benefits. It is also worth mentioning that increased stress levels can cause digestive upset as well as increasing the bodies need for some of the ingredients above such as the B vitamins, biotin, folic acid, L-Glutamine and L-Lysine. Therefore this could be an ideal product for someone that suffers with stress related digestive complaints. However, I think it could be really beneficial to anyone suffering from digestive problems such as diverticulitis, colitis, Crohn's disease, diarrhoea or constipation. Or like me, someone who wishes to promote healthy digestion as a way of preventing any digestive problems from arising.
- Taking the Capsules -
The capsules are quite large but have rounded edges and are quite smooth and soft making them not too challenging to swallow. They are transparent so you can see a fine yellow powder inside. They have no odour so aren't unpleasant to consume. I have no problem taking three of these daily.
- The Results -
This is always a tricky subject when it comes to supplements. As usual there aren't really any visible results. I haven't experienced any digestive issues since taking these, but I may not have done anyway. There is one significant change I have noticed since starting to take these capsules and that is I have more energy. This could well be because my food is being efficiently digested to release good amounts of energy but it is impossible to prove that this is the case. However, I feel confident that these capsules are doing me some good even if there are no miraculous results.
- Price and Availability -
I can't remember the exact price I paid for these but I think it was around £10 which I think is a little high for a 20 day supply. In actual fact I didn't read the packet before purchasing these just assuming that it would be one per day, giving me a two month supply. I will definitely look out for these again when they are on offer. They are available from Holland and Barrett stores but don't seem to be on their website.
- Would I Recommend? -
I would definitely recommend these to anyone who wants to help promote intestinal balance and a healthy gastrointestinal tract and colon. They could be particularly beneficial to those suffering from stress related digestive complaints but are a good supplement for anyone to take.
